Japanese Dreamcast?

Post by Faffel »

A friend at work is giving me a Japanese Dreamcast for free with controllers and everything, but I don't really need it. Is there anything special it can do, or should I just sell it?

You'll be able to play Japanese games on it, but other than that there's nothing too special about it. You'll need to either use some variation of the swap trick or a boot disc to play any legitimate US games you own (unless you manage to track down and install a mod chip); any self booting bootlegs you find will work just fine regardless.

Yet another instance where the only people who got boned by the region protection were legitimate users.

But hey, if you get froggy and decide to pick up Under Defeat or Border Down, you'll be able to fire 'em up.

I don't really see the point of owning DC games now that the system is dead, except for stuff like Under Defeat.

Do you mean actually buying them games? Otherwise, I'm wondering why you are here...

But yes, backups will work fine no matter the region.

Not always. There's a ton of rips out there, even CDI, even on Underground Gamer's set, that were done by lame groups who forgot to region patch them. If they aren't patched to support all regions, then they will still need a boot disc.

I own a Japanese dreamcast from launch day, I also purchased a USA Dreamcast when it launched as well and can tell the Japanese reads CD-R much better then the USA one ever did, which I got rid of now :D

I've had an American DC for years and years and I still play it, but I just got given a second one that happens to be Japanese. Guess it's pretty much the exact same as an American one?
