Opinion on the Jaguar?

Post by Icedawg »

Just a general question.... I'm looking to spend some money and feel like buying a new system to try and play. I currently have my N64 but that's mainly for the Aki games; I like to have "different" systems and not just the NES or SNES.

So maybe can someone give me their honest opinion & experiences with the system? I know the controller sucks lol

I'm actually getting one for Christmas even though I just sold the majority of my game collection.

I really want to try out a few of the games, and it's one of the few systems I haven't tried.

Of course, I haven't had the chance to hold onto one yet, but I've heard on AtariAge that the controller isn't as bad as people say. It's just massive and the keypad is annoying.

From what I can see, it'll be a love it or really, really, really, hate it sort of thing. The library is mostly crap but you have to decide whether the good games are worth it. The titles I'm most interested in:

Alien vs. Predator
Tempest 2000
Defender 2000
Missile Command 3D
Towers II
Super Burnout
Iron Soldier
Raiden
Hover Strike
Power Drive Rally

IMO, getting the system now is mostly for the novelty. Kinda like a 3DO, most good games on it were either ports or ported. I can't say my library for it is extensive, but I've yet to pop a game in that made me wonder why the system flopped.

On the flip side, the system itself is mostly very sturdily built. SNES-like I'd say. The card-edge A/V port aside, of course.
The controller is kinda meh, but doesn't feel like it's going to break anytime soon either.

Given the overall cost, you could certainly do worse for a curiosity from the mid-90s console war...but it would not be my first choice for actually putting a lot of time into playing.

Overall how big is it? I've seen some reviews on youtube and the thing just seems like it's giant. I did pick up a few games tonight; Checkered Flag, Hover Strike, and CyberMorph for about $19.

There's a system on Amazon for close to $116 that comes with Kasumi Nija and I'm also looking on Ebay at a couple of systems. Is paying $80-100 too much?

There's several games I'm interested in, and most of all I just want to play it because I never have before.

Thanks!

$80 to $100 is average on eBay. You may want to see if there's anybody on AtariAge that will sell you one (note: not sure about their marketplace policy regarding new members).

It's not that large. Its around 9.5" by 10"

That's more than I'd pay for either. Try to win an auction or get one off AA. Buy it nows are usually (as in this case) overpriced.

Something like this perhaps?

Yes I am watching that... it ends tomorrow I believe I'll be home in time for it. There was another auction today that ended at $61 with $14 shipping but i forgot about it (pissed!). Will post a topic on Atari Age next, there's a guy selling the system boxed with Cybermorph but he wants $160 a bit steep for me

There are few gaming experiences as exhilarating or mesmerizing as playing Tempest 2000 in a dark room with a rotary controller on a big bright CRT screen (with s-video)!

That alone is worth whatever price of admission you may have to pay.

There are also a lot of nice surprises on the system, and over the past two years or so that I've had one it has quickly grown to be one of my favorite systems to explore new stuff on. I'd strongly suggest getting one.

I could understand fans of it, but there's much, much better systems out there. I'll stick with my DC and SNES...
