Joy to the world

Post by J T »

Sometimes I find life lessons and inspiration from unusual sources. Lately it has been muppets. After seeing the recent Muppets movie, I was thinking about how much I love the Muppets for spreading joy. They are unashamedly happy, inclusive, and optimistic. I want to be the kind of person that isn't naive to the dark side of life, but is still a positive force in the world. I guess I want to be a muppet of a man, or a very manly muppet. ;)

Anyway, my point is I would like to do more to be joyful and spread joy. I've suddenly become very interested in the topic of creating joy. If I may speak abstractly about my values for a moment, I think I spend a lot of time fighting back negativity and injustice, but that's a more critical and competitive acitivity. I want to actually engender happiness, not just stave off darkness. Rather than argue for a specific way I think the world should be, I want to create a vision so likeable that others would want to join naturally.

I'm wondering what sort of things you guys do (or see other people do) that spreads joy around them. I'd like to get some new ideas on little things anyone can do to make the world just a little bit better of a place, no matter how silly that idea sounds to some people. Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

compliment strangers. Think about it: a stranger just says "wow, I really like yr shirt/hair/eyes/whatever."

I try to at least say to say good morning/afternoon/evening to strangers when I'm interacting with them. And try to thank them whenever applicable.

Otherwise, I just spread sadness and misery around, unfortunately. I've been gloomy for a while, though I'm trying to bounce back.

This is part of the reason I'm a brony. The fans are some of the nicest and most creative people. Just seeing what they do, everyone's general attitudes and how they treat each other brings a smile to my face.

Also, I show people this and change their lives forever.

I do care very much about certain issues, and as a result I do quite a bit of donating (to reliable organizations).

Other than that, I'm in the same boat as jfrost. Pretty much a grump when it comes to face to face matters.

A habit I picked up here in Charleston that some friends of mine find weird is giving a thank-you wave to people who let me walk past their car when they're trying to get out of a parking lot or onto a main street. Charleston is not a car-friendly city, and especially near the college the foot traffic can get insane. I figure thanking a person for not running me over is the least I can do.

I had stopped at Old Navy when running errands today and a somewhat short girl asked me if I could pull something down for her to check. It was no big deal but she was super appreciative. I hung around to put it back when she was done. Maybe I should have chatted a bit more as she was very cute. Weird thing is the person that checked me out told me thanks for helping her too. No big deal and would have helped just for asking no matter who it would have been. :)
