Try getting any version of Street Fighter 2 that doesn't have the word "turbo" in its name. I'd try SSF2:

It's on the SNES and Genesis, among others.

Is that a 3DS XL in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me? ~ZeroAX

The best advice any of us here that play fighting games will give you is to practice a LOT. Training mode is your best friend and you are only as good as the people you have to play against.

You could start with Street Fighter on almost any platform, but I say to pick a game that interests you. Don't think about character tier lists and what games people push on you. I believe any character can be played effectively and you can actually play better with a character you like versus picking someone top tier for advantages. Since you have an xbox 360, Super Street Fighter 4 is cheap and there is always someone to play against online if that interests you. The 2012 update is around the corner with character changes for the entire cast.

there are various types of fighters out there.

mainly 2D and 3D tho.

There are different games; some are simple and some require specific button pressings.

Some of these games, the playstyle hasn't changed much in 10/20 years. These guys are easiest to get into. They are quite interchangable, street fighter, King of Fighters, Darkstalkers, Guilty Gear series.

3D games are a little more complicated. Some are 3d ish, some are fully. These games use special combos and their sequels either improve of make things worse from the game before. These games do require more patience and learning. Tekken, Soul Calibur, Bloody Roar, Dead or Alive.

There is also the mulitplayer factor. In the early days of arcades, you played the fighters and learned other players quirks and tricks. There was a vibe that cant be matched now. Now that can be somewhat redone with online play. The thrill of playing with friends and that total stranger that just kicked your ass.

Play them both and see which ones you like best.
2600 and jr,5200,nes/top loader, master system, intellivision, TG-16, genesis 1,2,3, SNES, snesJR, CDX, 3DOfz10, gamegear, gameboy and pocket, GBC, sega saturn, PSOne w/screen, Virtual Boy, N64, NGPC, Gameboy Advance sp, Dreamcast, Black Dreamcast, oXBOX, Playstation 2, PStwo, Gamecube, gameboy player, DS lite,DSi XL, PSP1000/3000,Wii,PS3 120gb,3DSXL, xbox 360, PSvita, PS4

The Dreamcast has a bunch of fighters; for 2d check out Street Fighter Alpha 3 and for 3d check out Soulcalibur.

Start with your dreamcast. Get a Saturn model 2 controller and an Saturn > DC adapter or a decent arcade stick.

The Dreamcast fighter library is still very relevant. There are many Dreamcast fighters that are still being played at the tournament level today, actually.

Take a look at games like:

Capcom vs SNK
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
King of Fighters Dream Match '99
Soul Calibur
Marvel vs Capcom 2

Learning any of those games will give you a great primer for many of the fighters that are popular right now.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I left those out since learning 3rd Strike really only lends itself to playing 3rd Strike and 2002 is import only for the DC.

KOF is import yeah but you can always grab the iso. No biggie there.
