Stop the Internet Censoring Bill

Post by MrEco »

Copied from a different forum. I looked and haven't found this here yet, so I urge you all to sign the petition and please spread it to any others you think wise to spread it to.

Exactly as it appeared on the other site:
If this law passes, sites like Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr could be shut down for letting users post freely.
Join the protest to stop it.

A while ago this was discussed on many, many forums, and most people just laughed it off and said "Oh, it'll NEVER get through the first stages".

Well... yeah :I Try to post in on other forums you're on and send it to all your friends, because this is kind of getting serious now.
The IP Act (S.968 - PROTECT IP Act of 2011) establishes a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be "dedicated to infringing activities." The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against the alleged infringer and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. In some cases, action could be taken to block sites without first allowing the alleged infringer to defend themselves in court. The PROTECT IP Act would allow copyright owners – movie studios and other content providers – simply to accuse a website of infringement, which could lead to that site being shut down by court order and entire links to the site being wiped clean from the Internet. The bill is so poorly written that it would allow any copyright owner to shut down a legitimate retail website, such as Amazon or Best Buy, by alleging that one product being sold on the site could “enable or facilitate” an infringement. It could even allow any content owner to block access to the Patent Office website if it receives and posts a patent application for a product that is believed to use content without permission. The PROTECT IP Act will hurt American innovation. This bill will give one side the power to put the other side out of business and this is dangerous beyond words.
Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

This shit needs to stop. They are gonna keep trying to pass similar laws until it finally gets through. It's up to everyone else to constantly fight back against it and never give up.

I sign petitions for this sort of thing all the time and it makes me sick how close things end up. We need more support! Thanks for making a topic about this.

I had posted about this a couple weeks ago. Here's an infographic on what will happen. I have a letter for you to send to your representatives right after.

Please send the following letter to your representative(s):
Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

I am writing to you in regards to my concerns over the Stop Online Piracy Act, being considered by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee today.

Online piracy is a huge problem, draining many billion dollars from the United States economy every year. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act does not reflect adequate measures to helping stem this loss, and needs to be augmented or revised.

The Stop Online Privacy Act IS NOT the way to do it.

SOPA has the potential to have wide-spread consequences towards the nature of the web and how we use it. It allows private, super-powerful corporations to essentially interpret and practice their own copyright law, shaping and using it within their own interests. Content providers and hosts such as ISP's and storage platforms (e.g. Google, YouTube, and Facebook) would be forced with impossible tasks of ultra-regulation of content, severely affecting their ability to do business.

This bill essentially allows the sidestepping of the First and Fourth Amendments. The American public will be deprived of the right to view or display content based on the whims of large corporations.

The bottom line is that this bill will shift economic focus to outdated and declining forms of content provision. It will reduce the speed of our economy's recovery for the sake of preserving old economic systems. It will also SEVERELY affect the ability for online start-ups to conduct business based on existing content platforms or the ability for online start-ups to host their own services in a profitable manner. Internet entrepreneurs will be critically hampered by the passing of this bill.

I urge you to sound your voice against the Stop Online Privacy Act, and work to find a more rights-preserving solution. I also urge you to contact the following representatives who are sponsoring the bill to warn them of the dangers and First and Fourth Amendment infringements from its passing:

Mark E. Amodei (R-NV)
John Barrow (D-GA)
Karen Bass (D-CA)
Howard L. Berman (D-CA)
Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)
John Carter (R-TX)
Steve Chabot (R-OH)
John Conyers (D-MI)
Theodore E. Deutch (D-FL)
Elton Gallegly (R-CA)
Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
Tim Griffin (R-AR)
Peter King (R-NY)
Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM)
Mary Bono Mack (R-CA)
Tom Marino (R-PA)
Alan Nunnelee (R-MS)
William L. Owens (D-NY)
Dennis Ross (R-FL)
Steve Scalise (R-LA)
Adam B. Schiff (D-CA)
Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)
Lamar Smith (R-TX)
Lee Terry (R-NE)
Mel Watt (D-NC)

Thank you very much for your time.
I want to see this bill get destroyed like nothing I've seen before. I don't know how I could live without the Internet how it is now. And I don't want to find out.

They try to pass similar laws all the fucking time. This has been going on for many years. The evil leaders of the world want to destroy the internet because it poses the largest threat to them. It's extremely important that we stop all of these bills from passing.

The rich are the ones who our representatives actually represent. That's why we keep seeing this happening.

Augment the DMCA? Really?

Either the person who wrote the letter doesn't know what augment means or he or she thinks that the DMCA is actually too lenient.

Which is bizarre either way.

I really hope this doesn't pass. I may actually cry, as the internet is the one place that's truly free in this world. It's one of the best things we've ever created, and they want to ruin it.

The fact that this is even being discussed shows just how far the United States has fallen. I am always so ashamed of my country.
