Physical Music Subscription?

Post by Lone Wanderer »

I buy a lot of music (specifically metal), and enjoy owning it. I don't want to get a subscription, because I prefer physical media, and I'll have to pay for the rest of my life if I want to keep it forever. I am looking for a more cost effective way to satisfy my musical needs without pirating. In this past year, I've probably spent $300+ on music.
Is there any place I can get CD's/Vinyl/Tapes at a discounted price if I buy a certain number per year/ at a time?
Help much appreciated.

You mean like Columbia Music or BMG music like they used to have in the 80s & 90s, right? I looked into it a couple years back for the same reasons. I couldn't find one. Flea Markets are a great place to find cheap music. And look in you local area for any used music shops, they're actually more common than many people realize. If you're lucky, the used music shop will sell retro-games, too, my local shop does.

BMG changed names semi recently, but they may have tanked already if you can't find anything about them.

However, you aren't missing much. I did BMG several years ago to boost my metal collection. But their selection was so pitiful I exhausted it in a few months.

Your best bet may be to check the labels of your favorite bands and see if they send out samplers. I know sub-pop and touch&go used to do a "singles" type thing where they would send out records if you subscribed to them. That is for vinyl, though.

Alright, thanks guys. If there is any place that sells stuff wholesale, that might work too.

You actually do own the music you download from Amazon. There is no DRM whatsoever. However, the quality isn't as good as buying it on CD. It's also more expensive. >_>

I've been buying most of my stuff off itunes since its convenient but I'm getting rid of my iPod and I'd prefer a physical copy.

I used to really abuse the music clubs in the 90s. I had 2-3 subscriptions to each club (BMG, Columbia House, and CDHQ) all going at once at any given time. Each was signed up under slight variations of my name (first name, first initial & middle name, first two initials, etc.). I would get the intro package, buy the required number of albums (which was only 1 with BMG!), and then quit for a few months before rejoining. I must have picked up several hundred CDs from them when I was in high school/early in college, for an overall average of $3-4 a CD (including shipping) when all was said and done.
