I wrote to SNK in 1991 and they responded

Post by Redifer »

I had rented a Neo Geo back in 1991 and I sent my thoughts to SNK, mainly about their deceptive and ridiculous advertising. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of what I wrote, but I imagine it was at least a little fanboy-ish (biased towards Sega). SNK's "Game Lord" responded with a two page missive (Photoshopped into one long letter here). The response is hilarious.

My thoughts:

1. No, they are measured in megabits. Magician Lord is not 47 megabytes. Oh, and I am a movie theater technician who repairs and installs projection equipment and movie theater sound systems. He said ANY technician, so...

3. Hilarious that he actually believes this. I told him that if the Neo Geo is 24-bit, then the Genesis MUST be, too.

I'll let the rest of the letter speak for itself.

Still pretty awesome that they took the time to answer. As for the technical details, I think that it's easy for us, who have all information at a Google search's distance... In 1991 things were quite different.

What's the problem??? The AES is a 24 bit system (it has a 16 bit motorola 68000 CPU with a companion 8 bit Z80 CPU). At the end of the day the genesis or even the snes are no where near as powerful as the AES. That's SO cool that Chad "Gamelord" Okada took the time to answer the letter of a crazy sega fanboy

If the Neo Geo is 24-bit, the Genesis cam easily make the claim that it is 32-bit. Technically, it IS 32-bit.

Yup. The Neo Geo is a 16-bit system. The end (remember, the Genesis and even SNES also had a 16-bit main processor with a "companion" 8-bit processor). We all know nowadays that "bittage" doesn't really matter for shit. Only now are 64-bit computers starting to catch on, but SOMEHOW the wimpy 32-bit versions of Windows XP could emulate the powerful 64-bit N64 perfectly.
