I just played the Sonic Adventure 2 demo
I've actually never played any 3D Sonic games. My copy of PSO came with the demo for SA2. I guess it's just level 1, but y'know... I liked it a lot. So which 3D Sonic games are good?

Re: I just played the Sonic Adventure 2 demo
I loved the original Adventure when I first got my Dreamcast some odd years ago. The opening level is just memoriable, for good reason

Re: I just played the Sonic Adventure 2 demo
Some sections of the first Sonic Adventure are good but the action gets broken up by other things (like Big the Cat's fishing levels). I don't really think that these non-Sonic and non-Tails levels are bad per se, they just feel varying degrees of mediocre when compared to the rest of the game. I enjoyed it overall and it's definitely worth playing, but you can tell that its formula is a little raw.noiseredux wrote:I've actually never played any 3D Sonic games. Sonic Adventure 2 in my opinion has an overall better feeling and more refined gameplay and cuts down on the number of missions that just feel like random sidequests. However, if you disliked either the mech or gem collecting levels in the first one, those things are still about 2/3 of the game in SA2. The characters can be pretty obnoxious in SA2, with Eggman probably being the only real exception. Skippable cutscenes make this much less of an issue fortunately.
I myself haven't tried any 3D Sonic games after Sonic Adventure 2.

I like Sonic Adventure very much and Sonic Adv.2 was a very good sequel. i also like Sonic Heroes and Sonic Colors was a very good game IMO. that's about all the 3D Sonic i can recommend.
If you're gonna jump on Sonic Adventure for DC, Make sure you get a "Sega All Stars" version!

Save yourself a lot of headaches
A good batch of DC launch titles came defective and Sonic Adventure is no exception! Sega recalled what units were defective and replaced them with working copies, but there are still plenty of defective titles in the wild so there is no way to identify which is which. A "Sega All Stars" label diminishes any guess work! and they look cool! (best Budget re-release design of any console IMO)

ah! Good to know. Thanks. I was looking at both versions and couldn't see any real difference between them.CD AGES wrote:Save yourself a lot of headachesA good batch of DC launch titles came defective and Sonic Adventure is no exception! On DC you're limited to Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Both are great in different ways, though they've also noticeably aged. Shouldn't be a problem for any member of this forum though.
On GC/PS2/Xbox, you've got Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog (as well as some remakes). Both of them tend to be hated for a variety of reasons, and its generally difficult to say whether you'll like them or not unless you try them. I happen to love Heroes, but I thought Shadow was pretty meh. Heroes at least is unique in that it allows for switching on the fly between a team of three characters. Shadow has guns and a somewhat silly alien invasion storyline. Your call.
On the Wii front, you've got Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight. They're both gimmicky, and again, you've got to try them out to see how you feel about them. I thought Black Knight improved greatly on everything Secret Rings did, but a lot of fans will tell you that Black Knight is a mess.
In either case, the gameplay in the wii games is very different because Sonic moves forward on a rail style path. Its more twitchy.
Far better on the wii is Sonic Colors, which is just fantastic in every way. It uses the style introduced in Sonic Unleashed (below) and improves on it big time, as well as introducing more side scrolling areas. The controls are spot on (for once) and the game is just plain damn fun.
On 360/PS3, you have Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Unleashed. Sonic 06 is essentially Sonic Adventure 3 without any of the polish one might expect. Its fucked and broken in a lot of ways. You can see bits and pieces of a fun game in there, but its buried under a mountain of glitches. The level environments, at least, are gorgeous. You're pretty safe to skip this one if you want. The game's story even writes itself out of continuity.
If you do play it, you'll need patience.
As for Unleashed, its a lot of fun and stupidly fast (it introduced the modern Sonic "dashing" game style) but half of the game is taken up by some love 'em or hate 'em beat 'em up levels. The stages in this game are beautiful, and the music is great too. Its worthy of a play, but Sonic Colors does the best stuff better.
So overall, since you're enjoying your new Dreamcast, definitely grab Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for that system, and after that I'd recommend jumping over to the Wii for Sonic Colors.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, They are absolutely the same product in a nutshell but you end up having to eliminate any issues that your potential copy of Sonic Adventure wont work on your DC which to me personally, means a WHOLE lot!
