Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Yahoo prediction of Video Consoles in 2020

Post by AznKhmerBoi »

Popular video game systems such as the Wii, PlayStation and Xbox may still be in homes next decade, but they will look much different. Rather than buy a separate console, Enderle expects that consumers will instead buy smart televisions with a gaming system built into it, not to mention tablets and smartphones that will continue to ramp up their gaming options.

“It looks like analog game systems won’t make it until the end of the decade,” Enderle says. “You are already seeing the Wii have a tough time holding on to the market and PlayStation has been struggling for a while.”

The gaming systems that will succeed in the future will be those that manage to move away from being focused solely on video games and more on other entertainment options such as movies, evolving from a traditional game console into more of a set-top box.

ack! that sucks! I like my 52inch television so if there's a cable that can link up to that, I'll take just that thank you very much ;)

I predict that Yahoo's prediction is incorrect.

We have a Samsung Smart TV ... and it already has games built into it (can purchase more through their app store). We're living in the future!

Yeah, I'm not seeing it.

Current gen systems are already offering all kinds of other non gaming related junk you can do when connected online. I use exactly none of it.

My PS3 and 360 get some use to watch movies, but its not from streaming netflix. Its from taking an actual disc and putting it in. Its a convenience, nothing more.

I doubt it'll go this way, but in the event that it does, I'll be very disappointed. Seems to me like such a setup would homogenize and simplify games to an extreme. You'd probably have to wade through a waist deep pile of shit games and applications to find a handful of diamonds.

Even if we do get a does-it-all set top box, I'm sure there will still be game systems you can buy that are focused on doing one thing right.

Yeah, so you can't upgrade your gaming console without upgrading your TV? No thanks, not going to happen.

While I hate the idea, I wouldn't be surprised if new TVs in 2020 have built in video game streaming capabilities, similar to the current OnLive service. I originally thought everything would be download only, but streaming makes more sense, money-wise.

You pay a monthly fee and get access to all of the streaming games. As time goes on, new games will be added to the service and older games will be removed. It will require a constant internet connection to play. There will also be ads all over the place, both in and out of the game.

I just hope my SNES still works in 2020. That's all I'm worried about in this regard.
