Anyone switching to a credit union with what's going on?

Anyone switching to a credit union with what's going on?

Post by J T »

I already have my money and my loans in a credit union, but my wife decided to leave Bank of America recently after just transferring everything over from Chase (once Chase bought WaMu) only few years ago.

We didn't want to pay all these new ATM and checking fees though, plus they are just passing the buck on to their customers after some new taxes targetting big money banks, which were supposed to bring back some of that bailout money we all gave them after BoA, Chase, and others tanked the economy. There's a whole "Bank Transfer Day" protest scheduled for November 5th where the Occupy protesters are trying to get people to switch over to a Credit Union on that day to send a message to the big banks. Sounds like a good idea to me:

I have an account with a credit union, they refund me for all my ATM fees as long as I have direct deposit setup with them, and free checking.

Can't beat that

I wellsfargo, but I might just close that account after paying off my credit card with them..

^Wells Fargo is planning some new debit card fees too, so you might want to make the switch.

Here are the top 5 reasons to switch from Bank of America:

Bank of America sucks monkey balls... they never tried anything with my account, but they royally screwed with my wife's debit and savings accounts. Luckily, we kept all of our paperwork and in the end they ended up owing us money.

I currently use two different banks (neither of them are Bank of America) and have debit cards with both. If either of them started to charge me for bullshit things, like debit card usage fees, I would look into alternatives.

Link? I also use Wells Fargo, but won't hesitate to switch if they're going to screw me.

I don't use a debit card or ATMs; there's a local Chase branch a block from work for the times I need cash but I do almost all of my purchasing on credit cards (and pay the balance every month). I think Chase instituted a fee on their checking account but I hit one of the conditions for the fee being waived, I think the direct deposit of my paycheck. Until something happens that actually impacts me I'm going to stick with what I have rather than deal with moving my money around.

My wife and I actually just switched to a credit union last week. We were with Firstbank, now we're with Bellco.

We got really tired of red tape nonsense and screwjob fees.

I'm already a member of a local credit union. Works exactly like a bank, minus the fees. There is a catch, though, you do have to have at least $25 in your savings account if you want a checking account, that's like your ownership into the union because it's member owned. In addition to my checking & savings accounts I also have everything banks have: checks, ATM card with Visa, a travel Visa Card, online checking, and I have a car loan through them. No addition charges at all for that stuff.
