My motel room is haunted.

Post by Bikeage »

Two nights ago I stayed at a motel across from the airport in Knoxville, TN. I am never, ever staying there again. Besides being a shady, run down shithole, my room was haunted. While I admit to drinking and smoking herb, I am very experienced and not nearly fucked up enough to hallucinate what happened the other night. A timeline of the events:

8:45 pm. Alone in room, hear what sounds like a phone ringing once. Not sure if it was the room phone or TV.

9:05 pm. Hear sound of phone ringing, not a shrill ring, but the kind of muted ringtone you would hear on a business phone. so pick up phone in room, thinking my co-workers in the next room are pranking me. Only a dial tone when I pick up. Ha ha, real funny guys.

9:15. Hear one ring.

10pm. Hear three rings, do not pick up phone and encourage the prank.

11pm. Hear sound of phone ringing again, pick room phone on second ring to a dial tone, and a third ring occurs while the receiver is in my hand.... ringing is not coming from phone.

11:02. While still sitting next to phone wondering "WTF?", another three rings. This time I put my ear to the phone, and realize the sound is coming from the clock radio next to it.

I inspect the circa 80's clock radio, which is GLUED with a very strong adhesive to the table. Finding nothing unusual, besides being fucking superglued to the table, I say fuck it and UNPLUG the clock radio and the phone.

11:55. The UNPLUGGED clock radio which is glued to the table leaving me unable to inspect it further further FUCKING RINGS THREE MORE TIMES. I officially freak out. But due to the drinking and smoking that have occurred, decide to not alert my co-workers or management and accept my fate.

12:05. I hear the very faint sound of radio static, followed by 30 seconds of technical chatter, coming from the UNPLUGGED clock radio manufactured in the fucking 1980's. I assume there is a battery of some kind inside, but I cannot open it up, because of it being stuck to the table. Clock radio has no discernible way to function while unplugged. Tried but could not budge it. Whoever did this did not want it to be removed.

12:07 Hear the sound of one ring.

So while brainstorming my dilemma the only conclusion I can think of is that somehow the unplugged clock radio holds some kind of charge, and is intercepting signals from the airport across the street. That or it really is haunted.

6:30am. Up for the past 30 minutes, getting ready to leave, and hear one single ring. Got the hell out of Knoxville.

True story, freaked me out enough to share. The signal interception theory makes sense, I guess.... my co-workers obviously thought I was crazy when I told them what happened. They told me they tried to prank my hotel phone, but theirs did not work, and they had no alarm clock in their room.... Just glad to be home.

You're pretty crazy for someone on the internet.

If I were a ghost, I'm sure I'd have more interesting things to do than try to communicate with Bikeage. Watching women shower, for example.

run down shithole
Paper thin walls and hearing things from other rooms. No such thing as ghosts. End of story.

Damn, this is even better than mine. However, it is possible for radios to pick up transmissions sometimes. Once on my computer my speakers picked up a trucker call. Not sure electrically how that works, but it happens.

Possible, but seriously, the clock radio was stuck to the table with an extremely strong adhesive. I've stayed in many cheap motels and never seen that. I tried with all my strength to at least check the bottom of the device for a battery compartment, but it. would. not. budge.... and i'm not some 90 pound weakling. And it was obviously made in the late 70's or early 80's. Either it is holding a charge due to design or otherwise, or a battery that was installed prior to being permanently affixed to the nightstand is still working.

While trying to pry the damned thing open I fantasized seeing some modern electronics inside, but without proper tools, there was no way to open it without causing permanent damage. Being that the room charge was on the company dime, I decided not to risk it, who knows how big a stink hotel management would make or charge.

I had my ear right to the table holding the unplugged phone and clock radio immediately after hearing it late into the ordeal, and believe me, those sounds were coming from the topside speaker of the unplugged clock radio.

Basically. Any loop of wire (like the electromagnet that moves the speaker to make sounds) crossed by an alternating magnetical field will have current induced in it.

It's how transformers (and radio) work, if you have seen one you probably know that they are composed of two spires of wire around a square metallica core. There's no need for a metallic core, air can also act as core.

So yes, it makes sense for sound to come out of unplugged speakers.
