Maybe young people don't understand RPG

Post by JC48573 »

With the lack of rpg, I don't think newbies are getting exposed enough to the genre.

A lengthy and well thought out argument good sir.

But seriously, could you extrapolate please?

It's only natural that if there aren't as many RPGs out there, fewer new people will be exposed to the genre. And really, "newbies" don't typically play (or enjoy) RPGs anyway; it's more of a core gamer thing. Except Pokemon and Paper Mario, I suppose.

Did I just walk into some parallel reality where Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls weren't incredibly popular?

Well, since he was talking about RPGs as if they weren't popular, I assumed he meant JRPGs. If that's not what he meant, then I don't know what he's thinking.

But that's what confuses me. Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls are massively popular, but even if he's talking about JRPG's there's still quite a lot of those flooding the market.

WRPG's from the likes of Bethesda and Bioware. JRPG's every now and then, Xenoblade being the latest big one, I guess. MMORPG's coming left and right in the coming months. Strategy, shooter, puzzle games incorporating RPG elements. Action RPG's; Diablo III and Torchlight 2. DS and PSP have full-fledged RPG's like Radiant Historia. If you look at PC indie side, there's a lot stuff from smaller companies, that have more or less RPG elements.

Is RPG genre really suffering? I have seen typical RPG character advancement and specialization, and quests, put into games more than I feel comfortable with, lately.

Let's rather talk about how turn-based strategy or shmups are not doing so well, for example... well, apart from hardcore war strategy and one company developing bullet hells.

Young people understand RPGs. Most of them just have other things to do that are more fun and less demanding.
