dsheinem's MONTH OF HORROR 2011! What games are you playing?

Post by dsheinem »

I like to watch a lot of horror movies, read some horror fiction, and play a lot of horror-themed games every October. Last year, I created a thread and quickly discovered that many of you share the same passion for the macabre.

So, with about a week to go until the month of horror begins, I thought I'd get the ball rolling on this year's edition so that people can start making some plans and maybe pick up that horror game or two they've been wanting to try...

Here's what I am considering playing for October this year:

-Splatterhouse (PCE) (the original is the Together Retro game for October, so everyone should play it...it won't take you long!)
-Splatterhouse (PS3) (2010)
-Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC)
-Rage (PC) (I know this only marginally counts, but iD games have a history of producing good scares...plus it has mutants in it)
-Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles (Wii) (never finished this last year  )
-Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (PC)
-Dementium: The Ward (NDS)
-Luigi's Mansion (GCN)
-Brutal Sports Football (JAG) (this looks similar to Mutant League Football, which I played through last year)
Cursed Mountain (Wii)

I am also debating trying to get Phatasmagoria and/or the original Alone in the Dark working on my PC, since I own physical copies of both. Those are lower priority, though. I'd also be open to suggestions for any horror-related shmups that aren't Deathsmiles (which I have played and enjoyed, but am looking for something different) or any MAME-supported horror-related games in general.

Like last year the list is probably longer than I will actually be able to complete, but I am hoping to carve out a good chunk of them between the 1st and 31st of next month :)

So what about you? Any horror gaming plans for next month?

If you are still looking for a game, be sure to consult JT's list of free Halloween-themed games here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 44&t=33439

Does Super Metroid followed by Metroid Prime count? Haunting, enough? No? Throw in Castlevania I-III (if I can finish them...) for me too then.

My list:

Splatterhouse (Mame)
Splatterhouse III (Genesis)
Castlevania I-III (NES)

There are obvious horror elements with Castlevania, but Metroid is strictly sci-fi.

You're right, I wouldn't call Metroid horror, but I do find it pleasantly haunting. Castlevania it is, though.

The music in Metroids are badass and Spooky.

Metroid just has amazing atmosphere, I'd say that.

Kind of like the first Unreal, with its amazing music and settings... the atmosphere says enough and pretty much creates the narrative.

y'know, I had never thought about it as I'm a very casual fan of the Metroid series really. But I'd be willing to be that the movie Alien was certainly an inspiration for the atmosphere of Metroid. I mean, female killing aliens in a super claustrophobic environment?
