I'm currently reading up more on the file, and found this which was useful and allowed me to fix it:

I just needed to remove the registry entry - now the CD-ROM works and I am free from the .sys
Hi guys,
I accidentally messed up my CD-ROM drivers and need to reinstall them. Unfortunately I can't find them in the Acer support download (or indeed on the folder where I have the drivers that I can get from there stored - that was useful as I had to reinstall the LAN drivers before I could get online
Some moral of the story (just to save you the trouble of telling me):
Don't forget to have this sort of backup before tinkering with your laptop (I thought I did as I had all the drivers available from the page, but guess not)
Basically, my Acer Aspire 1603LC support page is somewhere around here:
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/no ... _1600.html
As I mentioned before, I can get a bunch of drivers including for the touchpad, the LAN, the graphics card, but not the CD-ROM.
One alternative is to perform a complete reinstall, but I was not really feeling like doing it. Fortunately I have the LAN drivers working now, which (to me at least) is WAY more important than the CD-ROM.
In any case, I'd like to get the drive working - the hardware itself is not dead, just not configured under XP; the device manager seems to be complaining of missing the file:
"GEARAspiWDM.sys" (well, that's precisely what I removed as it seemed to not be such a nice file, so not much surprise there). I guess I need to put it back in order for Windows to see the drive again.
Any comments, suggestions or ideas?
Ivo.
