I usually start a fighter in single player mode and I don't care about special moves, unless I see the computer opponent do something really cool and I want to learn it.

If I like the single player game, then I start to learn more moves to prepare for multiplayer. If multiplayer is fun, I will use single player to train while still testing my abilities in multiplayer.

If I get obsessed with it, then I will use the training features of the game and read about the game online and watch videos and learn the move sets and combos and I practice, practice practice, fight, fight, fight.

And then I'll get bored with it after a few months and wonder why I spent so much time learning things that have no value outside of the game world.

of course , any fighting game i want to be good at i would go in tutorial mode and learn pretty all the moves for the characters i like.

EX: my one korean friend held some sort of winning title when he was living in korea and i wanted to beat him so bad. This of course made me want to learn the moves of my fav character, which is Kazyua Mashima. After 2 months or so i had the rougly 100 moves memorize, but still not enough to beat him.

Took another 3 month or so to understand combos system, juggles, etc....

After tough training of rougly a 1 1/2 years i manage to get a few about 4/10, which is incredible. Prior to this he never played easy and his winning streak against all of my 5 tekken friends fanatic was roughly 99% win ratio on us.

One of the reasons I don't play fighters anymore is because I got tired of learning all the complicated moves and combos. 3D fighters especially, which I never got into the way I used to be into 2D fighters

Fighting games just got too complicated for me

Is this speed chess we'll all get to watch?

But yeah, complicated moves are all part of the game; if you don't like it, just play at a casual level. (Which is why I shy away from tournament-heavy games like Street Fighter III.)

I use to play competitively and living in Southern California I'm able to play with some of the best players in the world. For devoted fighting game players, it's not so much that we have to learn complicated moves it's the timing, mind games an' metagames.

For a game like SSFIV it's not so much that the input for the moves or combos is complicated it's the timing that screws a lot of people up. If a player can hit 1f links consistently then anytime s/he punishes s/he will be able to dish out max dmg output. So in this case I spend a lot of time in the training mode getting the timing down on my links.

As for games like Tekken, with an insanely massive movelist, you study the frame information and build your strategy around that.
