Namco "Tales of" Thread

Post by lisalover1 »

Well, as opposed to me making a whole bunch of threads about one of my favorite RPG series of all time, I thought it would be easier to condense everything into a single discussion thread. Let's kick things off with three new juicy tidbits of information.

First off, the newly-released Tales of Xillia has sold a whopping 525,605 copies in its first week on Japanese shelves! I have a good feeling that this title will be crossing the pond. But, then again, it's Namco we're talking about; the company that makes decisions by asking the ever-wise Coco the monkey.

Second, screenshots have been released for the newly-announced remake of Tales of Innocence R for the PlayStation Vita, following a long and rich history of Namco releasing a Tales game, then releasing it again later on a PlayStation system. Some things just never change, I guess.

Finally, there have been rumors popping up lately that the "Tales of the World" spin-off series, which were a very popular series (in Japan) will see a new release on the Vita soon (in Japan), because of a teaser website for the Tales series set up by Namco (in Japan). As for this one, I have an unfortunate feeling that the next TotW game will remain... in Japan.

I want to explore this series some more. I played Tales of Symphonia 1 & 2 and LOVED them.

I actually own Tales of Phantasia/Legendia/Abyss but haven't touched them yet! (I buy games way faster than I can play them).

The worst version, lol.

I dig the Tales games a lot. I've got a weird curse from them though, I played a lot of Phantasia, Destiny, and especially Symphonia, but I've never finished a single Tales game. No idea why. Symphonia was the one I liked the most probably.

I'm a huge fan of the Tales series but am very disappointed in the lack of new titles not coming to the US :(

I have played all of them in the series including Symphonia, Vesperia, and Abyss which were all excellent. They have great story, character development, and simple battle system gameplay. 8)

I hope Xillia comes stateside because it seems like forever since I last played a JRPG with the exception of Final Fantasy XIII

Which Tales of Phantasia version do you consider the best?

I was in the middle of my Tales of Symphonia playthrough but then Xenoblade Chronicles came in so I took a break from it. Looking forward to getting back to it after I beat Xenoblade though.

And when I have time, I want to restart Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia on the PS1 because I played them halfway years back but never finished them. Maybe I'll even get into the Tales of Phantasia fan translation on PS1.

Haven't tried any of the newer Tales games (PS2 era and up) but I did check out the fan translation of Tales of Innocence on DS and it kinda left a bad taste.

I think the SNES and PS1 versions are equally regarded as better than the GBA version.

I personally prefer the PS1 version because from what I see the current complete fan translation actually subtitles spoken dialogue, a feature not found in the SNES fan translation.

I prefer the theme song from the SNES version though 8)

The SNES version of ToP was a technical marvel for its audio [quality rivaling current CD games, and actual voices!]; and along with Star Ocean [which also accomplished the same feat, and as a side note, had all of its spoken dialogue in English for the translation patch release], were the biggest ROMs ever released on a SNES cartridge, weighing in at a whopping 48 Megabits!
