iPad Emulation Discussion

Post by 8bit »

I've had a jailbroken iPad and iPhone ever since I can remember. I've always found one or two features that are worth going through the pain of not being able to update until a suitable jailbreak is developed for any new firmware. Whether it was MMS on the original iphone, multitasking on the 3g and original iPad, or tethering on the iphone 4.... there has always been a good reason to consider jailbreaking an iOS device.

Well last night I rediscovered another one. I have had emulators on my devices previously... but now with my iPad 2 I have rediscovered how badass it can be! Within just a couple of hours of tinkering and downloading, I've got full collections for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advances up and running beautifully.

These new emulators run amazing on the iPad 2 thanks to its dual core processor and 512mb of RAM. And best of all most of the emulators support the Wii Remote and/or Classic Controller! It's amazing how much better having a real controller is compared to the touch screen. And the Classic Controller really makes the games with more than just two buttons shine! On top of that I have got the HDMI connector to go with everything, so I have a full screen, wireless gaming experience on any TV I connect with my iPad.

So who else has tried emulation on their iOS device? Did you use one of the new advanced control schemes like the Wii Remote or video out? What did you think? If you haven't, do you plan on giving it a try?

I have the composite TV out for my iphone and use it for mobile emulation as well. I didn't know that a lot of emulators were compatible with the Wiimote though. I'll have to try that out.

I remember my friend telling me that he got an N64 emulator to work on his iPad.

And here I thought people were emulating the iPad.

Not so sweet as you may think. iPhone devs already get the ability to do just that. Using a touch interface with a mouse just totally blows.

You are right, however, if they could get the Apple Magic Trackpad to simulate the multitouch user interface... it may be functional enough to be rather enjoyable.

In the end I could see the iOS and OSX environments slowly melding together to create a unique and brand new platform.

I am just upset that the Ipad and Apad developers have not figured out how to make the emulators multiplayer. Especially for the N64 and SNES. That alone would make it go from a kinda want to a must have.

Well that and syncing a ps3 controller for the PSX emulator. The ability to play Chrono Cross on an Ipad/Apad with a PS3 controller would be awesome. play it at lunch at work, then go home and plug it in to the tv for the big boss fight, this is not unlike what some of us use to do with the GBA and GB player.

Dosbox surprisingly runs well on both platforms aswell:

I have not tested them all just yet, but I have got multiplayer on my SNES iPad emulator running just fine with two wiimotes/classic controllers. The emulator I am using is Sne9x EX. 8)
