Digital Media question
Digital Media question
Hello there,
I was browsing itunes(i dont buy) and i found i can download 2 nickelodeon shows for free. So I did.
Then i gave it a thought. Its not worth purchasing digital media when its locked.
I thought supose I download a full season of "24" for ex. I will be stuck watching it on Apple devices. Suppose i do own one, that is say ipod 32gb. Now I can only watch it on my ipod, i can watch it on tv unless I have another apple device(appletv). And usually these devices have a short life time span(5 years?). I will also cant store the whole show on my devices as they are very limited in size(32gb-64gb) you need a good hard drive space of few 100GB especially when its in HD. So its totally not worth buying this stuff.
owning something like a dvd is played on multiple devices including laptops and desktops.they are very thin and can be stored any where in the house, which if u have a place to live you have plenty of.
So who invests in purchasing digital media?
If you rent it, i understand because ull just watch it for once u dont have to save it or anything.
if it is unlocked(no drm?) u can copy it multiple times and take it on different devices, and even put it on a cd/dvd.
My question, does any one invest in digital media?
especially video ones? I really rather buy a box set than download a copy which i can use on limited devices. This thread mentions Apple but it can be applied to any other company with strict use of media on certain products.

Re: Digital Media question
I always get my movies/TV shows on VHS/DVD/Blu Ray. I've never bought digital media, and I never will. If something costs more physically than digitally, I just pay more. If it's only available digitally, I wait for a physical release, or just never buy it at all. I don't want to pay money for a downloaded video. What do I do if I lose my file, and the company that was selling it goes out of business? Gone forever. Boooo.

Re: Digital Media question
Agreed. I don't think I could ever pay for a downloadable movie. I have to admit I have purchased some games for PSN, XBLA and Wii Web Space or whatever it is called on that system. Yes, I would VERY MUCH rather have physical discs for those games. However with people the way they are, they don't care about physical packaging very much. If you convince them that you are saving the entire world by not offering physical packaging (and therefore not cluttering the landfills because you know how these people like to throw away their boxes like complete 'tards) you will win them over.
Re: Digital Media question
I always buy physical products, I don't want to pay real money for things that only exist digitally, I rather be able to actually hold it in my hand. Plus my internet is to shit for me to constantly be able to download videos or games even if I wanted to.

Re: Digital Media question
Although I prefer physical media when I can get it, it doesn't stop me from occasionally making a DDL purchase ("digital media" is a misnomer that I hate, since it more accurately describes CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays than it describes direct downloads). The one caveat is that I always make sure there is a practical means of getting around any DRM and making an effective backup. DMCA be damned--if I buy something, I am going to safeguard my purchase.

Re: Digital Media question
Only time I'll buy digital media is if it's either DRM free or has a form of DRM that's non-intrusive and reasonable (see: Steam).
