Anybody here ever played any? Besides the Ys series, that is?
Why are they never mentioned? I understand the language barrier and all... but it seems they would be mentioned *sometimes* at least.
I recently studied the comprehensive list of PCE games at pcengine.co.uk and found that there are quite a few RPGs, including turn-based ones. And Falcom of Ys fame appeared a lot.
The PCE was big in Japan, as were RPGs in the days before FF7 kicked the door in and got more than a niche audience of international players interested. So it's no surprise to find a bunch of RPGs on the PCE.
So why are they never mentioned? They must be at least *some* good ones, right? Somebody here must be into them. I'd love to hear from you.

Neutopia is one of the only other ones, not a very rpg heavy system. I suggest getting into the shmups, because there are a lot of great ones on that hardware.

Re: About PCE RPGs...
I can only think of a few that are english friendly.
Neutopia 1 and 2 are pretty good if you like zelda-like gameplay.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 if you'd like a more traditional jrpg.

Exile 1 and 2 if you like sidescrolling action rpgs

Dragon Slayer- the legend of heros.

Dungeon Explorer 1 and 2 if you like gauntlet like games, but want more of a story and towns to visit.

Not my cup of tea but there is also D&D: Order of the griffon.

Thats all I can think of that got a US release besides Double Dungeons but why torture yourself. There seems to be a lot of rpgs releases in japan. I wonder if any got translation patches? I would love to play the far east of eden games.

There are quite a few threads on this topic at PCEnginefx. Since you've been there, why not do a more in depth search for them? I seem to recall that a few of the RPGs had fan translations. Either that, or they have in depth English FAQS that you can use to play through the game.
I might be wrong, but I think at least some of the Xanadu games and Far East of Eden games had translations.
If you are wondering about why most of the RPGs were disc based, it is because there was never any battery back up on the HuCards. Eventually, there were alternative memory solutions like theTennoke Bank add-on and HuCards, and also a save game feature if you had the CD add-on or a Duo, but by that point, what's the point of making a HuCard RPG when you can just put it on CD?

Cadash is awesome in a sidescrolling RPG (Zelda II) sort of way.. Reminds me of Faxanadu.. Speaking of Faxanadu, I'll second pepharytheworm's recommendation of Dragon Slayer. A very solid RPG from the early years..
