Retrogaming Magazine

Post by chalo 07 »

Is there an alternative to Retro Gamer?

It seems like a high quality mag, but it's a tad pricey for U.S. residents. Yes, I'm sure it's probably worth it, but in a hobby that to a degree, trumpets thrift as a virtue, 131 bucks is enough to make me look for an alternative.

Any suggestions?

(Plus, I am a homer for the USA...)

Your alternative is reading retro gaming forums and watching retro gaming streams. Putting out a high quality print publication is an expensive prospect, especially for a niche hobby like ours. Take some of the money you've saved by buying used games and invest it in current projects. That's the only way this hobby will grow.

I am only aware of a couple print magazines specifically for retro gamers, and both are European. Until someone comes along in the States and really puts their finances and marketing savvy into a new publication, I do not foresee the situation changing. :?

You have a good point. Since retro gamer seems to be the most polished publication, I will probably get myself a subscription as an xmas present....

Less than three bucks for a digital copy, now that is doable.

Does their yearly subscription include the annual? I ask because it's $9.99 around here, so for the year it makes more sense to just pick up individual issues. I did download one for my iPhone for $4.99 but the print seems the better buy.

I like the magazine a lot, except for the heavy slant towards retro European systems like the spectrum , etc. To be expected though given it's publishing base.
