Once you get the hang of things, with the insane difficulty, and using auto-fire, Darius Gaiden becomes amazing. I'd go as far as saying everything about it is completely perfect. Even when you use autofire, the game gets automatically harder with the more power-ups you pick up, almost encouraging to take full advantage of all outside resources. I also love the surreal style that Darius takes on.
The music is fantastic. And even after beating the game once, there are still many paths to take, almost offering a new game entirely. I'm still on the first path and have been playing for a couple weeks now.
I'm currently playing the Saturn version using SSF (emulates perfectly btw.)
SEA-CREATURES HAVE RETURNED TO OBTAIN THEIR VENGANCE.
EDIT: If you have the option, definitely play it in wide screen. SSF lets you do this too.

I love this game, and I think it has some of the best music also. Great shump, I don't know why more people don't love this game.

I beat Darius Twin for the SNES and it was alright. Not terrible. But then I got to this and practically shat my pants after the first boss exploded.
Do you know if Darius Advance was any good?

I've always kinda sucked at the Darius games, but I love them for the aesthetics and music. I even got my girlfriend to let me name one of our cats Darius.
Re: Darius Gaiden is F***ing Awesome
This and G Darius (PS1) are amazing. I got G Darius back when it was new and Gaiden on the Saturn around 2000 or 2001. Both still get play from me fairly regularly (G Darius a bit more, since I can play it on the go with my PSP).
I'm not really into the other entries in the series, however (not counting Metal Black). I find the earlier games to be very... average at best. I just don't get a lot of enjoyment out of them.
However, it would still be awesome to have a copy of Darius Alpha.

by Darius Advance, I assume you mean Darius R? Actually, I'm selling my CIB copy. I actually wrote about it for the Racketboy GBA Shmup guide not long ago. My general assessment is that it looks amazing, but feels kind of cramped because the sprites seem too damn big for the screen which causes the game to be hard as hell.

I do like me some Darius but curious, why Alpha? Cuz it's rare or you dig boss rushes?

Just beat the game on the Z' Route. Easy mode, auto-fire, NOT using Player 2's credits. IT WAS AWESOME!!!
