That was LAME!

Post by RCBH928 »

I wasn't really old enough to have a critical mind back in the mid 90's but I wonder if any one can remember playing a game back then thinking it was COOOOL and looking back at it now and thinking, boy that was a LAME game!

I really don't have that feeling, most games I remember are just as good as they used to be for me. The only thing is kicks me is that graphics usually look a lot worse than I could remember. For example street fighter alpha looks a lot more pixelated that the smooth anime graphics i had in mind. And I remember Phantasmagoria being that game where you play in a movie and fmv is jaw dropping. When I looked back at it now, I can't believe the fmv looked so bad, its like video on SNES! Which is weird since it was on 7 cds! not cartridges and it even plays on a PC not a console, so i figured all the hardware and software necessary to run a good FMV was within consumer reach in '96 the release of the game.

Ok, I can remember one game being lame. WWF RAW on SNES, I remember this game used to be fun and I used to get excited over it and the button mashing, I tried to play it recently and I can't believe it is so boring and sucks gameplay wise. Graphics are sad.

I remember garfield caught in the act being better. But it's just a cluttered confusing platformer.

Phantasmagoria 1 and 2 are pretty awesome, I enjoy those games a lot, even with some of it's bad acting, poor quality videos and insanely high ammounts of violence and gore.

Anyways, I find Riven to be lame now, Myst was great, the puzzles were challenging but do-able, some of the scenery was absolutely breath-taking and it had a great plot. Riven on the other hand... it's a frustratingly difficult game that doesn't deserves all the acclaim it received.

Since you mentioned WWF Raw, looking back on them 3D Acclaim wrestling games, those games are AWFUL by today's standards, I remember loving these games to death, playing around with the CAW feature and wrestle in the weapons match, it was fun. Nowadays, not so much, especially you compare to AKI's N64 wrestling games, it has such deep gameplay, the graphics where actually good (if not better) than the Acclaim games, sure the thing it lacks of the CD quality music and sound (for the record, I am not a No Mercy fanboy, I consider that one a disappointment compare to Revenge and WM2k. SD:HCTP is my favorite wrestling game)

Frankenstein: The Monster Returns on NES. I remember the game being so cool when I first got it back in the day. I loved the anime-inspired cutscenes, and ate up the horror themed baddies.

I just recently bought it and I can't believe how unbelievably short and uninspired the levels are. And then suddenly, the last level is longer than frick and the final boss cheap as hell after cake-walking the rest of the game.

No way.

I remember going back to it and was rather appalled by how all around crappy the game was.
