Fallout, GOG or Steam?

I've never played the first Fallout and was wondering where I should buy it. I know GOG has no DRM but I like how easy it is to play games on Steam. I need advice on which version to buy. Any suggestions?

Games from gog are optimized to run on newer operating systems, meaning its more likey that the game will actually run. The steam version is just the exact same as when the game released, so it may be problematic to get running. Also, I have not used gog's support, but if its at all faster then Steams thats also a plus.

On gog its 5.99 compared to steams 9.99 and the gog version comes with a 124 page manual, desktop wallpaper, the Fallout Bible (205 pages), soundtrack, and a whole bunch of art and avatars.

So go with the GOG version.

Yeah this. I have used gog support, but it has usually been a member of the community there that solved my problem. Fallout 1 & 2 are two of their most popular titles, so I'm sure if you are having a problem with it, somebody else has too and it's likely already been solved in the Fallout forums.

Steam is easy to use, but I like to be able to back up my games in GOG. Just use the "add a non-steam game to my list" option and you can create a shortcut in Steam to your GOG titles.

If you want to have a nice picture that goes behind the game when you have Steam in detail view, just run it via Steam and take a screenshot (F12) it will then use that as your background image when you are browsing the game in Steam.

Doing these things makes outside games really similar to having bought the game through Steam. You just don't get the automatic updates or data tracking/achievements. (Though Fallout 1, 2, & Tactics don't have achievements and I don't think they've seen updates in forever).

The stuff that goes on Steam depends a bit more on the developers packaging it properly, whereas it seems on GOG it's GOG that does the packaging to make sure it plays well on modern systems.

Being packaged so that it works on modern operating systems being the primary reason. The older games on Steam generally have nothing done to them, and who wants to fuss and fiddle?

So GOG it is then. To everyone who suggested a physical copy my location makes it difficult to aquire certain games. I'm actually thankful for digital distribution since I can get games for a fair price.

When you DL the GOG version, read the manual first. Not just for RTFM, but because it is rather humorous and error-plagued (intentional ones).
