Non-shooter horror game recommendations?
Non-shooter horror game recommendations?
I'm tired of all the shooter style horror games I have, so I was hoping you guyz could recommend me a more puzzle/mystery based horror game. System that it is available on does not matter. Thanks.

Penumbra series? (I've yet to try this out myself, though. It is supposed to have a big puzzle emphasis.)
The Silent Hill series is also a good choice. They are action games but the series has tended to emphasize flight rather than fight.

Eternal Darkness is a nice mix of styles. There are guns, but a lot of combat revolves around melee attacks and using magic spells. It has some puzzle solving too

This. Penumbra is also good and by the same developers (Frictional Games). There are demos for both.jfrost wrote:Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
If you want something for free, try out The Marionette.
If you like cheesy FMV, I thoroughly enjoyed Phantasmagoria 1 & 2, though they are a bit hammy and some of the puzzles are lame. I also really liked Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. It's more serious than the Phantasmagoria games. All are available on gog.com for a reasonable price.
If you want to get into the early origins of the survival horror genre, gog.com also sells Alone In The Dark 1, 2, & 3 bundled together for $6. This is the 1992 Alone In The Dark, not the stupid 2008 one.
Another excellent horror game on gog is Realms of the Haunting. It does involve some shooting, but there is a lot of adventuring/puzzle solving as well. It's quite a gem.

Maybe the Clock Tower games would be a good choice

Fatal Frame series
Re: Non-shooter horror game recommendations?
Have all those except that Gabriel Knight thing... I'll check it out
Fatal Frame would be my favorite series out of all I own.

I'd try the Echo Night series if you haven't given them a shot. They're much closer to puzzle games than they are to FPS, despite being played in a first person perspective.
Recently KillerJuan played through I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, which is both disturbing and highly depressing. It's based on the short story of the same name, but features some changes to make it a playable game.
If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, check out Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of Ice, both of which are based around different stories in the Cthulhu Mythos.
If you can find a working copy, you might be able to track down the adventure game Scratches, though getting any sort of tech support for it is now impossible, and the copy I own simply does not work.
And then there are other adventure games like Sanitarium, Amber: Journeys Beyond, the Phantasmagoria series, The Dark Eye, The Path, and so on.
