Gaming Parents: Do your parents game with you?

Post by classicgamer5 »

We have a tread about you being parents and gaming with your kids, but not one about you gaming with your parents.

My dad played games back in the Atari days, then again when the SNES came out. He got Super Metroid from a thrift store when it came out, no guide, no instruction booklet and no internet to look up how to play it or where to go. It took me and him a couple weeks to go through it, but it was the most fun I'd ever had with my dad (this is why I love Super Metroid so much). His gaming habbits faded until Oblivion came out, he beat it at least 12 times so far and is addicted to RPGs. Its pretty cool to have a dad that you can play Dragon Age all night with

Anyone else have an parents that game with them?

Not anymore really, but when I was younger yes.

I used to get my mother to play certain n64 and gamecube games with me, among them Smash Bros. and Tony Hawk, as well as some others that escape me. There wasn't much to that, as the only game she ever really got into was Tetris, but she did it and I always appreciated it.

Both of my parents used to take me to arcades back when as well, but my dad loved to actually play arcade games with me. He'd always play any shooting game (time crisis or area 51, for instance) and he absolutely loved any racing game. He was damn good at racers too. He can't handle most games at all, but give him a steering wheel and he's golden. We were particular fans of Cruisin' USA and Cruisin' World when they were new.

Also, even though it doesn't count as a video game, we fucking love air hockey. One of my fondest memories of childhood is finally beating my dad at air hockey. Even now, if we're together and happen to discover a table, no matter where we are, we always have to stop and play.

He also loves pinball, while I'm at it.

I use to play Point & Click adventure games with my dad, started when I would have been 3 or 4 sitting on his lap with him telling me what to do, then as I got older I would kind of watch and give suggestions, but the time I was a a bit older we would both play games and just help each other when we were stuck.

My dad is a gamer (He is currently playing Duke Nukem Forever), but exclusively to the PC (Though he likes old school arcade games like Pac-Man, etc), we still catch up and talk about games over a coffee every now and again, he loves it when new P&C games come out.

I get called every now and again when he is stuck, as like me he wont use walkthroughs for adventure games, though asking for hints from another person is all legit

I remember I always use to get my Dad to beat boss's for me when I was younger on the PS1, PC or whatever.
To this day he still plays games, right now he's finishing up Red Dead Redemption on the PS3 and plans to go through all my Assassin's Creed's games afterwards. These days I have to help beat boss's for him

My dad use to play super street fighter 2 for sega genesis with the whole family in the 90's, except for my mom and aunt because they never got into it. My dad did get to play some pac man champion edition recently. Currently my dad like to play those poker/ card games.

I've got some memories of playing Frostbite and DK Jr with my parents at a very young age. And then of course we all played Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt. There are still times when we argue at the dinner table over who saved the princess first out of the 3 of us. My dad played a little bit of Sonic with us after that and I remember coming home from school one day to see that he had rented Sonic 3 for us the day it came out. What a blast!!

Sometime shortly after that though he seemed to have developed a strong dislike of videogames in general. I had to (and still do occasionally) defend my hobby to him now. I really dont know what changed his opinion for sure (I've got a couple ideas), but he basically detests video games these days.

When we had our first PC he used to play a ton of Civiliazations and Tetris on it also.

I only remember playing Atari games and a couple from Microsoft Entertainment Pack (like Jezzball) with my dad. My dad's friend next door, however, had an NES, so I spent some time there playing Legend of Zelda, Duck Hunt, and Super Mario Bros with his wife.

My Parents are not big gamers but my Dad was hooked on Tetris and we played a lot of Doom and occasionally Street Fighter II.

Neither of my parents were much fun to play video games with when we finally got a system.

It took my mother no less then 3 years of casual gaming to beat Super Mario Bros. It was the first and last game she ever played and won. And my father was to busy to play them.

However gaming with my mother has gotten far better with the Wii. She actually likes the Wii and playing games on it and she's okay at them too.
