I'm curious why Valve didn't think it would be worth porting the original Half-Life to the 360 or PS3 (maybe even as a download)
Would it be that hard to port over? I would have thought it would be cool to have a nicer looking console port of such a classic.
Am I missing something?

Maybe they just wanted to keep it on Steam?
I really don't know man. How many people who've played 2 have actually played 1? I don't think the first game is popular enough anymore to warrant a new release on consoles.
Although, I'd absolutely love a remake with updated visuals.

For the demand thing, couldn't you say the same for the original DOOM and Quake?

Re: Why No Original Half-Life on 360/PS3
I'd assume that it'd be a relatively small thing to make a version of Half Life Source, since they already have Source running on the consoles. Seems like something they could whip up as a bonus on a CE or the like, if they really wanted to.
That said, it's really only a small minority of games that are later ported to the subsequent generations of consoles. Hardly any FPS games from around that time are available for the 360/PS3, even ones with sequels on them. Quake 1 & 2 are absent (3 is only "Arena", not sure if that's the . The only Soldier of Fortune is 3. The only Unreal Tournament is 3. The only Deus Ex (will be) 3.
Most of the older FPS on Live/PSN are either console-first games, or 2.5D classics (DOOM, Marathon, etc). Ones that stand out for being some of the first games in the genre, or sometimes due to licenses (Dark Forces on PSN for example, though it also had a PSX port to make it easy).
Maybe it has to do with the progression of the genre. HL stands out in the history of FPS games because of game mechanics, not story. Subsequent games have build on those mechanics. Playing HL without keeping in mind when it came out, and what previous games were like...it's not crap by any means, but you might wonder why it was so lauded. Possibly a hard sell to the console FPS crowd.

Actually, Quake 2 was included as a bonus in the 360 version of Quake 4.isiolia wrote:That said, it's really only a small minority of games that are later ported to the subsequent generations of consoles. I actually found it to be more enjoyable than Quake 4.BoringSupreez wrote:Actually, Quake 2 was included as a bonus in the 360 version of Quake 4.isiolia wrote:That said, it's really only a small minority of games that are later ported to the subsequent generations of consoles. Before I bought Quake 2 for PC, I was actively considering getting Quake 4 for 360 just for Quake 2.Xelyx wrote:I actually found it to be more enjoyable than Quake 4.BoringSupreez wrote:Actually, Quake 2 was included as a bonus in the 360 version of Quake 4.isiolia wrote:That said, it's really only a small minority of games that are later ported to the subsequent generations of consoles. Other than including it as a bonus on some other game I don't think it would be worth their time to port it unless they did some sort of update. If you have a computer that's running and on the internet, you've pretty much got a PC that can run the original Half Life and expansions.

lol, well said. The game still looks and runs great too, just like Unreal and some of the other early 2000's FPS's.Hobie-wan wrote:Other than including it as a bonus on some other game I don't think it would be worth their time to port it unless they did some sort of update.
