Multi-ship shmup?
Multi-ship shmup?
Yup, I be a noob. I was going to try my hand at creating a short shmup for my amusement, and was wondering if anyone here knows of a game where you can control 2 ships at one time? I'm fully aware of power ups in some games which can sort of fall in this category, but I'm wondering if there is one where the gameplay relies on this sort of control. Thank you.

Raiden IV has a mode that lets one player control two ships independently at the same time with one controller
Re: Multi-ship shmup?
Thanks, I'll have to check that one out. I think I may have played an early games in that series in an arcade...
My plan is to use a ps2-style controller, with l1 and r1 firing and l2 and r2 switching weapons. Obviously, each analog stick will control each ship. Should be interesting to work out.

check out Duality ZF for xbox360
I think you can have 4 players controlling 2 ships at once for up to 8 ships on screen at a time....

Shoot 1UP! is good fun. Does 30 ships simultaneously satisfy your craving?

Shoot 1up reminds me of Tenjinkaisen a bit. Even though thats not a shmup at all.

Raiden III on PS2 has a 2-ship mode -- left stick is one ship, right stick is another. Uses the L1 and R1 as fire buttons, like you mentioned.

Tac Scan. Though as mentioned Raiden III and IV do exactly what you're talking about.

Duael Invaders perhaps?
It's a "mini" avaliable over the PlayStation Network which has you control two ships. One on the left side of the screen firing towards the right, and one of the right side firing towards the left. Directional buttons control left ship while face buttons control the right ship, and the ships can shoot each other.
Not sure if it's exactly what you're talking about as it's not really a conventional shmup, but it's an interesting idea. Pretty fun for two players to each hold one end of a PSP and battle it out.

Sweet, looks like I can try this type of gameplay before programing. Thanks!noiseredux wrote:Raiden III on PS2 has a 2-ship mode -- left stick is one ship, right stick is another. Uses the L1 and R1 as fire buttons, like you mentioned.
