Sega CD Repair to happen soon... any tips?

I recently picked up a sega CD model two, that turned out to be dead (no big surprise given the price). A quick google search suggested two things: clean and check the green F301 fuse.

Cleaning didn't work, so I opened the sucker up and, sure enough, the fuse was dead.

I've ordered two replacement fuses (one extra in case i mess up) and will repair when they arrive.

My question is this: has anyone ever done this before? How difficult is it? Any good tips?

If you got the right fuse or a compatible one and can solder ok, it is easy.

Thanks, I figured it shouldn't be too bad. I haven't soldered since eighth grade science club though, lol.

Take your time and go easy on the solder points. Both are small and don't have much solder and as a result are really easy to damage without intending to do so.

I'd recommend using some desoldering braid/wick on the bottom to remove as much solder as possible first. Once you get the hang of using the stuff it makes a lot of jobs like this dirt easy.

Just got back from vacation and fixed it all up.

As a soldering noob, I struggled a bit. As ape suggested, a soldering braid would have really helped, unfortunately, my local home depot didn't have one.

So I soldered the new Pico fuse on the underside of the board since there was more space to work with. Right now, it works beautifully. But we will see how long it lasts given my new awkward fuse replacement.

Another Sega CD with another dead fuse. Yay.

The new sega cd is a model two as well, but the circuit board is entirely different. I've located the power fuse (still marked by F301) and it is, in fact, dead.

The fuse is not the same fuse as the first model I repaired. The first model was a little green fuse on the top of the board. This is a tiny white box on the underside of the board.

My question is this: On the previous repair, I used a PICO II 2.5A fuse. It matched the original. I have an extra PICO II fuse. Can I use this PICO fuse on this model two version of the sega cd, even though the original board has a strange, tiny white box for a power fuse?

Yes. I have one that I repaired that was like that, using the PICO II fuse.
