Gamecube controllers

Post by vlame »

First of all, who wants to split these?

Real topic, has anyone used a NGC controller knock-off just to repair official wavebirds? I have used a wired controller to put a new analog in a Wavebird but they were both official.

I don't understand why people actually what to use that abomination of controller that is PlayStation. That left stick is all wrong, and they can't decide how they want to do two shoulder buttons, because they don't need two shoulder buttons.

I like the PSX controller. Besides there are literally tons of various PSX compatible controllers including some great Arcade style sticks that can be used with adaptors on other systems.

I have a PS2 to GC converter, and let me tell you -- if it weren't for that, I would have missed out on a lot of GameCube games. I don't care what anyone says, the GameCube controller is a shitpile. :p

The same converter works on the Wii of course!

I don't understand the appeal of the GCN controller either. It feels pretty good in the hands, but the button placement is awful.

The button placement is optimal. Except for Z and the d-pad. A is the main button. Its the biggest and in the center, every button can be comfortably reached off of A. A is the main button in most GCN games. B is the secondary button and feels so. Y and X are ancillary buttons and their shape is such. L and R have a nice analog feel and sound to them. Z is the biggest mistake. It appeared that really didn't know what to do with Z.

But every button is also easily reachable on something like a Saturn controller with 6 buttons on the front right side. I think the GCN is fine for a lot of games, but for fighters it's like... ???

I think the problem people have with it is the very concept of a "main" button. Sure, this works fine in platformers where you almost always want to jump. And fine in shmups where you almost always want to shoot. But in e.g. a 2d fighter, which is the "main button"?

You can't say the problem with the GCN controller is its not optimal for fighters, because in that regard no controller is, except those designed for fighters and the six button Genesis and Saturn controllers. That is why there are companies making and selling controllers for the PS3 and 360 designed with Genesisesque six button layouts.

If you're wanting to get the adapter to take advantage of the wide range of fighting controllers and other secondary controllers available, I concede that point. I hadn't thought of that when I made my original statement. However, PS2 standard controller vs GCN standard controller, there's no contest, in my opinion. The GCN controller wins. I'm disappointed the WiiU is going back to the diamond layout.
