It would be better to compare games with a similar budget. A budget title compared to a AAA game will tend to look worse even years into the console's lifetime

I believe one of our members has a blog that deals with this subject.

While the God of War games certainly pushed the limits of the console, it'd be appropriate to use screenshots captured with the same methodology.

The GoW2 shot there isn't something you'd get out of a PS2. Sony was known to have (first paragraph) released screenshots that weren't exactly true to life for those games.

It's still a good looking game for the PS2...but not -that- good looking.

Its all in the Coding, how a developer utilizes all the features learned from a console's capabilities. That screenshot looks real, looks like from the first God of War which can go 480p.

That's very true. If you're going to compare a 2001 PS2 game to 2007's GOW2, MGS2 would be a much better candidate for 2001 than some cruddy wrestling game no one has played for 10 years. MGS2 against GOW2 is comparing apples to apples, WWF Smackdown against GOW2 is comparing moldy corndogs to apples.

Yeah it definitely looks like it.
Oh and pro-tip: You don't fight the hydra in God of War 2.
