SNES + Flash cart

Post by Hateshinai »

Somebody asked me to mod their PAL SNES to run permanently at 60 Hz. He intends to use it to run NTSC games off a flash cart. I was wondering: should I disable the lockout chip as well or does the flash cart itself take care of removing region protection?

I have no problem playing PAL games on my NTSC setup with a PowerPak. I don't know about the Everdrive. I'd ask at the Everdrive forum. If that fails, PM StoneAgeGamer at AtariAge, he retails the thing and if he doesn't know the answer he will find out from krikzz

Looks like the Super Everdrive is using the clone SNES CIC chip, same as the SNES PowerPak. So I wouldn't bother with the CIC in the console, unless you wanna put the clone CIC in there. But that being said, I think the new "modchip" for the SNES is a better option for this guy.

Don't know if this guy got a second SNES to dedicate to run NTSC games, or if it's his only one but doesn't plan on running anything but NTSC games, but you should check this out:

It's a modchip that will auto detect the region as well as switch for 50 or 60 Hz. Of course, you can also manually set it to 50 or 60 Hz if you want. I think this is a better option than permanently moding it to 60Hz. But like I said, maybe he's dedicating this console to that purpose while owning a second stock SNES. Just figured I'd point this out to you.

I offered to install a switch for him but he insisted on having a permanent mod. He wants the SNES to look untouched and has no intention of ever playing any PAL games. The modchip method is sweet but I don't have the resources/abilities to do it.

It's just that some games will refuse to run if it doesn't like the video signal (50 or 60 Hz). The mod chip has a delay to fool the game then automatically switch it. You get a message "this game was not intended to be used in this region" or something to that extent. At least, that's what I've read, I've never messed around with PAL SNES games before.

But the CIC lockout chip is just the first check. If he's using a flash cart with the clone CIC, the CIC will always work. But if he tries to load a PAL game that checks the video signal, it will refuse to boot. In other words, if the console is permanently locked in NTSC mode, there will be some PAL games he wont be able to play despite the lockout chip.

But like I said, maybe he's planning on only playing NTSC-U/J games. Maybe he has a PAL SNES that he's gonna keep stock, then devote this one to NTSC. Any rate, it's up to him what he wants to do, I just figured I'd point this out.

Maybe you can find some one in your area to burn the mod chip for you. I'd offer to do it for you, but I think it would cost a little much with shipping.
