Internet Browsing on the HD TV with a Console

Internet Browsing on the HD TV with a Console

Image

A thread dealing with Internet browsing on the HD TV. A Mac Mini or a laptop works fine but consoles are already taking up the space. The main focus is what works, and how to improve the experience thru unique controllers and which sites offer a better to read screen. Wikipedia for example offers a "Mobile Phone Screen" with easier to read text.

Do you ever browse with your console? I always wanted to browse from the comfort of my couch using the HD screen. Please post anything you use for surfing, especially if you found some unique workaround solutions for controls and viewing the screen.

BBS Dreamcast
My first go at it was with the Dreamcast when I had Dial up. The DC actually worked, giving be an older style screen similar to BBS connections I used to get with a C64 and a 300 baud Westridge Modem. The Dreamcast was antiquated with no flash or videos but it actually worked on the HD! The SVideo text were blurry but readable.

PS2 Internet
There is the Japanese EG Browser, unfortunately I could never get it to work. Only for networks in Japan. I read about over in Europe there is a way to back door the PS2 thru a site to hop on the Internet. No luck here in the U.S. though.

Here is the PS2 Europe Internet article, anyone try this?

Wii Internet
I finally got online with the Wii. I found the remote works great as a wireless "Mouse." However, the screen single column mode display too large of text with only a few words on the screen at a time. In normal mode the zoom does a nice job, but then the forum width extends beyound the HD Screen on the sides.

Questions I posted on my Wii Thread
Nobody answered over there so here they are again. I do notice Wikipedia will auto detect the Wii and display a friendly "Mobile Phone" screen. The text is just the right size and no scrolling from side to side to read.

1. Does Racketboy have a Mobile Phone mode? The link?

2. Are there other sites that tailor the screen for Mobile Phone easy to read text?

3. Is there added text to any link to kick a Mobile Phone friendly screen?

For Example
The Kotaku site cuts out a lot of bloat with a "m." in the link:
http://m.kotaku.com/

4. What unique controller do you use for console Internet Browsing

Not interested in superior quality of PC and Mac browsing, but thru the consoles.

nope.

many popular sites (yahoo, google, youtube, etc) offer mobile versions that you can view just by simply typing "m." before the address. So youtube becomes "m.youtube" for instance.

Okay thanks. Oh crap, I was hoping the forums here would have offered the Mobile mode, maybe in the future?

I'll have to add a "m." to YouTube, also see what other sites do that. :D

I seem to recall Niode talking about that at one time, but I could be crazy...

No, you're not crazy. It was when we were talking about making a Racketboy app.

I have come to the conclusion that browsing on the console sucks. I've tried the DSi XL, Wii, and PS3 and they all suck compared to the PC/Mac.

Browsing on the PS3 isn't half bad in my experience. It has a (decent) flash plugin and can play most videos and game along with quite a few browsing options.

Honest, if you go browsing the web with a console/handheld/most mobile devices and expect them to display 100% of everything, then you're going to be disappointed.

Wait a second, you're saying something designed for a mouse and keyboard is worse on a controller?

Why, that would mean that console FPS's control worse than PC ones!

Control-wise, I think the Wii's internet browsing experience is near perfect. If you plug in a wireless USB keyboard, it becomes perfect. Control-wise.

Unfortunately, the Wii's lack of RAM and the nonexistent support for the browser kills it for me otherwise.

The PS3 browser is nice for porn though.
