N64 RAM Expansion: Required For Perfect Dark?

Post by NeverGoBak »

I've heard that Perfect Dark for N64 relies heavily on the RAM Expansion, I need to now just how much. Is the game completely playable without it? Or am I going to NEED to have one if I want to play the game?

I'm getting a used N64 from a friend soon, and I was going to order Perfect Dark as one of the games to kick off the library for it, but I need to know whether I can even play it or not.

I seem to remember you can't play very much without the expansion pak. I think only parts of the multiplayer are available without it. Its essentially required. Besides the expansion pak isn't that expensive, and the two other games that require it are two games worth owning: Majora's Mask, and DK64.

NeverGoBak, you pretty much will need one. The single player game is unplayable without one. Only about 35% of the overall game is accessible without one, so it's really worth it to pick one up.

Thanks, guess I'm getting one(If he doesn't already have one himself, his only game did get enhancements from it, being Turok 2). Considering I'm probably going to end up getting all the games that require it, and a few that are enhanced by it, It's a must have.

Get an official expansion pak. I've read that the 3rd party ones over heat and mess up your n64.

While PD, DK64, and MM are the only games that require the expansion pak, several other games have a hi-res mode you can enable or is auto enabled if you have an expansion pak. It's a pretty good purchase over all.

EDIT: Don't loose your jumper pack though. For games that automatically play in hi-res mode with the expansion pak in, a jumper pak is the only way to play in lo-res.

Worth getting for a couple other N64 games too.
Try Rebel Assault in a Higher Resolution with the expansion pack.
