Recasing games?
I've been thinking of converting my games to DVD cases. I'd be doing this for PlayStation, Saturn, and Dreamcast games. What's your take? Do you like the idea of recasing or do you prefer completely original? What do you think the pros and cons are? I'm interested to see your opinions, as theres quite a few collectors here.

Why move your PSX and DC games to DVD cases?
Re: Recasing games?
I've moved all my games to DVD/UGC/DS cases. It makes things look much nicer on the shelves. However, right now The Cover Project doesn't have covers for all the Saturn/PSX/DC games, so you might have holes in your collection.

Yeah, PS1 and DC regular old CD cases are fine they way they are. Saturn cases are pretty annoying though, especially if you have a lot of them. I would like them better in DVD cases, but I don't think I'll ever do that. What are you suppose to do with the original cases in that event? You'll still have to store them some where, because you definitely don't wanna throw them away. I guess if you're commited to switching to DVD cases, you could sell them. I'm sure plenty of people would want them if they have a disc with no case. Saturn manuals wont fit in a DVD case though, so that's another problem.
And printing all the new covers will be a bitch. Unless you have a nice laser printer that gets you much better "gas millage" (if you will). DVD covers are full page prints, that will suck up ink to print. I hate when I have to print up a cover on my inkjet printers. All I see is dollar signs.

I've noticed this but they appear to be making quick progress at least for the Dreamcast.'MrPopo wrote:I've moved all my games to DVD/UGC/DS cases. It makes things look much nicer on the shelves. I've been doing this as well, but, a lot of these DVD covers are even better than the originals. At least in the case of the Dreamcast.dunpeal2064 wrote:Exactly. I do revamp my cases so they dont have cracks though.

For covers that are missing on the Cover Project, you can request them here. I think it was Sevin who has a thread for requesting covers. I've done a few for a few members in the past. There might be a few more members that can do them as well. I don't mind making a cover if I have the time.
Re: Recasing games?
I printed off covers for my Dreamcast games and stuck them into my spare Wii game cases. Having your cases all the same height makes everything look so much nicer.
I get really pissed when I think of the ink wasted when a cover doesn't print right.Ziggy587 wrote:I hate when I have to print up a cover on my inkjet printers. All I see is dollar signs.

Re: Recasing games?
I kinda go back and forth on this.
I recased my entire dreamcast collection, as well as Saturn and Sega CD games, in blue dvd cases (with the exception of multidisc games, which got their own dedicated black cases), and they look really nice.
On the other hand, sometimes a nice, clean, new jewel case looks great too, and its a much easier option than printing new covers.
There's also the previously mentioned problem of holes in the collection. It can be tough to create covers sometimes because you need such a large, clean image to work with in order to make a cover that's worth a damn. That can be really tough to handle for older games that came in cardboard boxes. Just look at cover project's tiny game gear section.
Some covers look better than others too. I've got a couple that turned out kinda ugly, despite the high quality.
You have to keep cost in mind too. Ink, paper, cases, and a printer that can actually print colors worth a shit, it adds up fast.
All that said, its absolutely wonderful for cartridge games that no longer have a box. My gameboy games have never looked better, sitting pretty in a ds case.
What I'm struggling with right now is whether or not to case my cart games that have a cardboard box. I'd want to keep the original boxes and preserve them, but why get new boxes for games that have a box already, even if some of them are pretty damn beat up? I'm on the horns of a dilemma.
I dunno. Its a preference thing more than anything else.

Re: Recasing games?
I guess I'm split on it too, on the one hand I love having original complete games, on the other hand, the DVD cases are not only more durable but they also kinda give a newer look to the games.
I actually wonder if Sega would have started using DVD cases had the Dreamcast survived. Especially considering there was a DVD add on supposedly in the works.
