So after dismissing and despising RPG's for most of my gaming life, I'm kind of getting the urge to try them again. I already have Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Dragon Quest IX, and Final Fantasy Tactics:War of the Lions. Mario and Luigi seems to be easy to pick up, as does Dragon Quest IX. I'm still having trouble getting into FFT.
I'm just curious if there are more RPG's out there for people that are new to the genre? I've actually been looking at the Pokemon series, as it looks like it is pretty easy to pick up and play. As far as gaming platform, I don't really have a preference between the DS or PSP. Thanks for any suggestions.

The games that got me into the genre were pokemon blue, super mario rpg, and final fantasy 7.

On the DS, I'd recommend all the Pokemons, all the Mario & Luigi games, and all the numbered Dragon Quest titles. They're all fairly easy to get into. On the PSP I'd say you should snag Final Fantasy IV and Valkyria Chronicles II. You might also consider Crimson Gem Saga, but if I recall right it needed a fair amount of grinding.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I started with the same games. After FF7 it moved in to games like Suikoden 1 & 2 and Thousand Arms.dunpeal2064 wrote:The games that got me into the genre were pokemon blue, super mario rpg, and final fantasy 7.
I would highly recommend Mario RPG. It was the first actual RPG that I got in to and could beat. It isn't for the DS or PSP of course but if you ever feel like tracking down some older systems or emulate that would be a good one.
Chrono Trigger DS would be pretty solid and its come down pretty low in price ($13), if you don't mind going back to the GBA there's some pretty solid titles there, like Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, and a few new / old Zelda games.

I know thats what it was created for, but I don't really think this is a good starting rpg. Its like most college prep classes in high school. Really easy to get through, and doesn't actually prepare you for anything.Flake wrote:Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
Not to say I hated the game, I thought the last boss was pretty entertaining.
Mario rpg really did it for me. I hated the genre before that (not knowing that pokemon was actually an rpg) Going from there to final fantasy 7, I knew I was going to be playing rpgs for a really long time.
Re: RPG's for beginners?
Another vote for Final Fantasy IV here. Also, Secret of Mana.
Re: RPG's for beginners?
The ones that got me into it:
- SUPER MARIO RPG! (first one, and I've probably beaten it like 10 times).
- Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy 6
- Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu 3 / Secret of Evermore
- Chrono Cross
- Final Fantasy 7-9

Thanks for the ideas. I think I'll be picking up one of the Pokemon games and maybe something in the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series pretty soon. I also loved Secret of Mana on the SNES so I'll have to keep my eyes open for that one too.
