One man's psychotic rage towards Final Fantasy 8

Post by Mozgus »

This is nearly an hour-long review of Final Fantasy 8 on PS1 much in the same style of The Angry VideoGame Nerd. Oddly enough, I hated this game just as much as this guy ever since it came out....right up until this week. I decided to give it a solid second chance and I actually worked out a playing-style which allows the game to be honestly fun. I still agree with the majority of this guy's issues with it, but he is approaching the game from the wrong angle and even blatantly lying in some areas. But hey, it's all funny.

If you don't want to watch it all, just watch the last 2 pieces.

Actually, its one of the most enjoyable in the series for me, leveling up is not so necessary and there is not much need for killing monsters for money, the junction system really works out once you get the hang of it. Drawing magic does get really annoying though

A few notes:

He's running the PC version. It has texture filtering, awful quality music, double the resolution, and less load time for each spell or move.

Regarding the drawing system, natrually you will HATE this game if you think you have to get 100 of every spell like this guy does. And I can tell you right now, if you play it that way, you characters will be insanely overpowered and the game will be easy and boring. But if you MUST do this, simply configure battle speed to the max, cursor set to memory, and just rig up the initial draw commands in battle, hold x (or rig up an object to hold x for you) and come back in 8 minutes or so.

Triple Triad is a bitch at first, but once you get a set of 5 good GF cards with high power, you're good to win 99% of your matches. Yes the only real point of the card game is to get cards to refine into items, which often net you very rare abilities or to remodel weapons. But it's still a fun pass-time.

Someone move this to game videos. Wrong section, despite this being a review, it's not local.

I loved FF8. Never understood why some loathe it. I had this dumb friend who considered himself some kind of rpg connoiseur. He always told me what a massive failure the game was and how it dissapointed the FF fans. Funny, considering it was critically acclaimed and sold well

This is why I always research things instead of just listening to what know it alls tell me. The only thing that bugged me was the (slight spoiler)

cheesy outerspace stuff. I'm referring to a certain lame mini-game and a sappy pop song. Anyone who's played it knows what I mean.

I dislike it because of the stock characters and uninteresting story. The play system is annoying and time-consuming, but the real problem is that the payoff isn't worth the work getting to it.

I'm not saying this game is great. Its just not the steaming turd I used to think it was. I guess the main reasons I play it are good music, good graphics, slick presentation, manageable menus.

As far as the series, FF7 will be the only one I truly like overall, because the materia system is the most pleasing to work with. And at least it's explained how it functions. This junction shit in FF8 was never explained at all. What physical objects represent a "junction" or stockpiled magic or GFs? What the hell do these things look like? At least we know materia look like marbles.

Didn't watch the guy's review. Anyway, FF7 was my first Final Fantasy and it is still one of my favorite games. There's so much stuff to do. So many minigames. Secrets to unlock. A cool story that, while serious, has lighthearted moments. A friend of mine had a Japanese playstation and imported 8 when it came out. Since none of us knew Japanese all we really did was watch the FMV intro over and over and drool. So when it finally came out in the US I quite possibly had higher expectations than I had ever had for a game before. Then I played it.

It's not bad. It's quite good. It's just not as good as 7 was. There's just less fun. It takes itself too seriously. The draw system is ridiculous. It was just too 'meh'.

I loved FF8. However, I can fully understand how many hate the junction system.

Actually considering replaying this game again soon. Guess it is better to play the PS1 version rather then the PC.
