Commodore 64 Lives Again

Post by Wombatula »

Not sure if it's been posted yet, but I found this interesting. Sorry if it's been posted before or is already well-known, I didn't see anything about it using the Search feature.

Commodore 64 Lives Again

The price seems a bit out there, though it has a ton of cool features. You can order here

From the CommodreUSA site:

"Units come with the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS operating system on disk ready to install.
Commodore OS 1.0, along with emulation functionality and classic game package, will be mailed to purchasers when available. "

"Unleash your creative potential with our new Commodore operating system, a distinctive, attractive, advanced and stable operating system experience, that will come pre-loaded with dozens of the latest and greatest productivity, creativity and education software the open source world has to offer. Featuring dozens of exciting 3D games, the latest web browsing technology, a Microsoft Word compatible Office Suite, advanced graphical manipulation programs, 3D raytracing software, advanced software development tools and languages, photo and movie editing and sound and music composition programs, there is no task too big or too small for a Commodore or AMIGA to accomplish. "

"Feeling nostalgic? Commodore OS will also be classic Commodore compatible, able to run classic 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit era software via emulation. A beautiful user interface allows you to easily peruse games for the Commodore PET, Vic20, C16, C64, C128 and AMIGA. No need to bother with floppy disks, as many games can be legally puchased and downloaded from the internet directly on to your computer. "

Is anyone else pretty excited about this?

Retrogamer has a nice C64 feature in this month's issue. I enjoyed it - still have a couple old systems.

It's as unaffordable now as it was when it was new. Has Commodore learned nothing?!

Original ones only go for like $150 on eBay. What were they thinking?

This is not a C64. Its a new computer in a C64 styled case. Nothing more. The price is actually not that bad considering you get a mechanical clicky keyboard that will last forever. A hard case and a compact design. There are different cheaper models if you would even bother to go to their site.

Uh, what? Compared to the Apple II and PCs of the day it was very affordable and you could hook it to your TV if you didn't want to buy a dedicated monitor.

Wasn't the reason it sold so well because of how cheap it was compared to other similar computers of the day?

My dad was unable to afford one back when they were new. Affordable for an 80's computer still isn't that affordable.
