My Gaming Set-up! Thoughts? Comments?

Post by P-Nation »

Hello All,

Recently got my retro set-up within spec and am so glad the purchasing and heavy lifting (in my case), is over with.

I've always been pretty big into video games and recently uncovered a lot of my retro stuff.

So I took an interest in hooking everything up the best possible way I can. I have a brand-new Samsung LCD that's great at displaying HD content, but leaves much to be desired with retro content.

After TONS of research I finally concluded the best option and the most cost-effective would be to buy European RGB Scart cables and a SCART to YUV transcoder all connected to a CRT TV for the best possible PQ. My Grandmother had an old CRT Sony Trinitron WEGA sitting around collecting dust so I finally took it home. Thing was over 200 pounds, not pleasant to lug up 14 stairs into my apartment.

Anyway, I have everything hooked up at this point. It goes from system, to SCART cable, to SCART switch, (with audio breakout) and then to the YUV transcoder, to component on the CRT. Everything looks incredible and I'm really, really happy with the results. This also beats having to buy an XRGB-3 when a possible X-RGB4 might be around the corner...

Several questions if anyone has the time or input:

SNES looks great. However, some games are formatted differently. For example, Super Mario World takes up the entire screen while Jurassic Park has black borders above, below, and at both sides.

This is also the case with most of my Sega Master System games. The PQ looks great - Just I'm unsure why some games take up fullscreen and others don't.

Thank you for your help in advance. Racketboy has been an invaluable reference in this whole process!

-Steve

P.S., For now, my set-up is as follows: Saturn, Dreamcast, SMS, SNES, NES Connected through RGB SCART to an RGB SCART Switch, passed through a yuv transcoder to a Sony WEGA CRT. The audio is output to a giant JVC Bookshelf speaker system.

Some games run at different resolutions and some modes might not get stretched by your TV the same. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snes#Video
