Looking for a good 2D fighter...

Post by MrEco »

I'm not a big fan of fighting games. I've tried playing a few Soul Calibur games, some Tekken games, one Mortal Kombat game, Street Fighter 4, and several fighting games based of the DBZ and Naruto animes. So far, I've hated every single one of those fighting games I've played. I was basically convinced that I hated the whole genre. However recently I played Blazblue: Calamity Trigger when I borrowed it from a friend and I actually really liked it. In fact I liked it quite a lot. It felt like I was playing a 2D Devil May Cry game. The characters were all very interesting. I loved the art style. And the soundtrack was plain amazing.

There were two things I didn't like however. Firstly, the plotline in the main story mode was incomprehensible. Second, almost nobody was playing the online multiplayer (I got into 2 matches, 1 of which was very laggy, after spending a good 15 minutes strait trying to find a game).

I'm interested in giving another fighting game a fare try. Basically anything really similar to Blazblue but with a good story and an active multiplayer community. Anything for PS3. Maybe also PS2 if the game is of high enough quality even though I won't be able to play the multiplayer. Last but not least, I really suck at fighting games so something with easy to understand mechanics would be greatly enjoyed.

Blazblue: Continuum Shift is an obvious choice but I'm skeptical about it's story. I've also seen some gameplay of Arcana Hearts 3 and it looks promising but I have no idea about either the story or multiplayer community. Also I'm not sure if I'm cool paying $30 for a download only title.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Well it sounds like you eliminated a lot of options without giving them a fair chance. Its hard to believe you like fighting games but hated all those great games you mentioned.

For YOU, the series to go with is Guilty Gear. In my opinion the strongest entry is Guilty Gear XX which has a few different versions out there but can be picked up cheap online for ps2. Arc System Works worked with Sammy Studios on the Guilty Gear Series before moving forward to create the BlazBlue games. The games are similar yet different, but this is the closest thing to BlazBlue you will find.

Guilty Gear is just an outdated BlazBlue. Don't waste money on it. Try Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on XBLA.

And don't play fighting games for the story. Ever. The only series with a good one is Mortal Kombat.

How did I not give them a fair chance? I played all of those games that I mentioned. In fact I pointed that out in my original post. And also, I said I wasn't a fan of fighting games until I tried Blazblue which was able to click with me in a way the others did not.
