So I'm seriously considering buying one. Who here has the new one?
Any gripes, issues?
What are the alternatives?
What's it like for reading non-Amazon Kindle books?
Is there any point in getting the 3G version especially if it's going to save me £50?
What's the prices like compared to actual paperbacks? Are they much cheaper or around the same price? Do they have sales like Steam has sales (IE really hard to say no to) or is it more like a Sony style "you get what you're given and like it" kind of sale structure?

I love it.
2 gripes:
Books are still too expensive.
If you dl'd a book for classwork it is very difficult to cite that version of the book as there are often no page numbers.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: Amazon Kindle
Unless portability is a serious factor in your reading schedule, I can't fathom what possible reason there is to purchase a Kindle. I say this as an avid reader that has had access to a Kindle before.

I do know of one guy who works at a local gas station. He brings his r-reader every day, but he reads faster than he can buy books (due to money issues). He also spends time looking for free books for it, which are apparently quite common amongst crappy vampire romance fiction. He seems to be reading one every time I talk to him.

The screen is absolutely fantastic. It's the most comfortable thing to read out there. That said, as far as I know there aren't really much in the way of sales like how Steam is. If you get the 3G one you can purchase books on the go, otherwise you have to be connected to a computer. If this isn't an issue for you then save the money.

Yeah, I can't see me ever being in a situation where I MUST by a book, like right now, I'm pretty sure I can wait. I'm never usually more than a few hundred metres away from a wireless access point. Hell, we even have WiFi in my pub now... Besides, isn't there a Kindle store for iPhone? Should the need ever arise, can't I just buy a book on there and then grab it the next time the Kindle is near a wifi access point?
Perhaps it's part of my gadget addiction, but I was chatting with a friend in the pub today and he had his kindle with him. I was amazed at the screen. It seriously does look just like paper. That is what has made me want one.
One thing that seriously appeals to me is the fact that I do a lot of my reading in bed, holding a book open is a pain in the arse when you're laid down, especially if it's over 400 pages. The Kindle seems much lighter than the average paperback I read and appears to be much more comfortable to use for longer periods of time.
Do you have to be connected to a computer? I read that it just connects via wifi, no software needed. If it does require software, what's the compatibility? Does it work on OS X?

It runs on wifi. It CAN connect to your computer but I have never had a reason to do so.

How do you get your own documents on it, like PDFs that I may have *ahem* acquired, from somewhere.

We don't have that over here, there's one place that sells it and they want £250. Also, what's the point in having a colour screen for reading black & white text? I'm open to more suggestions though!
