What should I play to get my Diablo fix?

Post by kelsoanim »

So I've been itching to play something with lots of looting and leveling. I'm looking for anything on console or portables, but I'm not interested in PC. What do you guys recommend? A game's cheapness could be a factor too for my quick fix.

Here's a short list of some of my ideas
- Borderlands (360)
- Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
- Monster Hunter (PSP series)
- Torchlight (XBLA)
- Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest (PS2)
- Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2 (XBox)
- Phatasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
A-B-P. A-always, B-be, P-platforming. Always be platforming! Always be platforming!!

Torchlight is pretty much Diablo, and Borderlands has random weapons a la diablo. Spiral Knights has good dungeon crawling, but is PC-only.

Well I can tell you right now that the Monster Hunter games are not really dungeon crawlers. The only "looting" per say is gathering materials to make better weapons/armor and there isn't a real leveling up system (minus your online ranking).

I suggest Untold Legends for PSP. It's only like $4 and provides a Diablo-esque experience.

Torchlight, Torchlight, Torchlight! Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer were co-designers of Diablo 1 & 2, and it shows in Torchlight. It's the best diablo-esque experience you're going to get without actually playing Diablo itself.

...and, well, it's pretty fucking awesome. :)

Grr... Image didn't work.

Anyways, there was a console version of Diablo for PS that was actually very good. So if you're looking for your Diablo fix that's not on PC maybe that's a good place to start.

Torchlight. Definitely.

You also might consider Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege I & II, Sacred, or Divine Divinity.

Torchlight and Titan Quest can be found on Steam.
Steam also has Dungeon Siege I and II, but you have to pre-order III to get them for now.

Sacred and Divine Divinity can be found on GOG.

Ooops. I just noticed that you said you are not interested in PC. Too bad. You could still probably run Sacred or Divine Divinity on any machine, so I wouldn't rule them out.

Magicka is really good and innovative in terms of the way spells are handled. I really like this game and it is fun multiplayer. You can get a free demo on Steam too.

I love Magicka (add me to steam if you have it), however you wouldn't get any form of 'Diablo fix' from it.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 are great hack-n-slashers. But can feel very dated as there are only a handful of classes to choose from and it has a fairly short main campaign. But still fun, nonetheless.

I'm playing through Champions of Norrath right now, and I'm having a blast going through it. If feels very much like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance but there's more meat to it than in BG: DA.

I'd only recommend PSO if there's people online still playing it somehow or something and you can do that. Although I spent 90 hours of playtime on mine offline, it was with a friend and it makes it a lot more fun.

Borderlands I loved to death, it's pretty damn simplistic after awhile (but hey so is Diablo really!), but yeah. If you're going in for something that has fun, simplistic, addicting gameplay, it's a good choice.
