Putting the guts of a SNES into a Super Famicom body?

Post by kelsoanim »

Hey guys, I haven't really done any modding before but I was wondering if it would be possible to take the guts from a SNES and put them inside a Super Famicom? I think the Super Famicom looks waaaaaaay sexier than the SNES and I think the SNES would feel much better about itself sitting next to my Genesis on the shelf. So I know I'd have to do some minor wiring and soldering, plus making the cartridge slot bigger to fit the SNES carts, but would the board and other guts fit in there okay?

I've read that you can just play Super Famicom games on a SNES by removing the two plastic nibs in the cartridge slot. Is that true also for SNES to Super Famicom? If so would just modifying the cartridge slot do the trick?

EDIT: pulled out the "PAL" from my question, thanks for the correction/info emwearz.

The US SNES and JP SFami are the same inside parts AFAIK which is why the games are interchangeable aside from shape differences in the cart slot. a PAL SNES has the different video out and such, so I'm not sure if screw holes and things will match up.

PAL Super Famicom?
Just wanted to point something out.

The Super Famicom is NTSC and is only known as the Super Famicom in Japan, its PAL counterpart (which has the same design) is known as the Super Nintendo.

the plate that has the DC jack molded in is different, and the RF modulator is of course different, it's NTSC-J instead of NTSC-U (it will work on american TVs, but only on like channel 96 or something like that) aside from that the board is interchangable as far as i kkow. those are the only differences between a us snes and a super famicom.
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:

the american cartridges will work in the japanese console; the only reason they don't is because they don't fit in the cartridge slot's opening. there's no reason to switch the actual motherboards. if i were you i'd just get a cartridge adapter. if your main concern is cosmetic appearance that would look way better in the end than trying to chip away at the cartridge slot until they fit.

Couldn't you just mod a Super Famicom or PAL SNES to play all region games? It sounds a lot less messy than putting the guts of one machine into another.

Well, this thread made my day.

Yeah, just widen the cart slot on the Super Famicom, or get a pass-through device (Game Genie with some mods should do it), and call it a day.
