Rio's school shooting

Post by jfrost »

Earlier today Brazil had its own Columbine. I thought you guys would find this interesting:

Guardian.co.uk wrote:At least 13 people have died after a gunman opened fire in a school in western Rio de Janeiro.

Some 20 people, including children, were wounded in the shooting at the school for students aged 10 to 15, the Associated Press reported.

The vice-mayor of western Rio said 13 people had died in the shooting at Tasso da Silveira school, although it was not clear if that figure was accurate or included the attacker. Edmar Teixeira said the gunman was a 24-year-old former student who pretended to be giving a speech to students before opening fire with two handguns. When police appeared at the scene the gunman shot himself dead, Teixeira said. He left behind a letter outlining his motives.

One witness told the Guardian he had seen between 15 and 20 children dead or seriously wounded.

Whole story: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/ap ... l-shooting

Some pictures of the comotion: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-13000979

I wasn't able to find any video in English talking about the massacre.

Nothing like this had ever happened in this country, although I see they're far from unheard of pretty much everywhere else.

Horrible stuff.

It's really kind of strange though that this is an adult former student attacking a bunch of kids. These things usually seem to happen when one of the students goes off the rails against their peers.

wow so sad.
I bet you his motive is to be notice and remembered for his cruel act.
Because no motive of his can justify his action.

Well, the United States is home to nearly 100 school shootings, so...

I think the Columbine shooting is very prolific for school violence worldwide too.

There was actually a shooting at a local community college here yesterday. 1 fatality, 3 injured. None of you heard about it.

The person just meant that it's something so very alien to Brazil. We have seen school shootings in the US on the news a few times in the last years, but we had never had one so close.

Is it so trivial already that it doesn't even make the news?

Because no motive of his can justify his action.

We can see in the letter that he left that he was clearly delusional. He gave instructions for his burial, saying that no "impure" should touch his body (by that he meant people who have "fornicated before marriage and those who have committed adultery"). He then proceeded to tell us how he should be cleaned and then put in his coffin. And then he wanted someone who is faithful to God to pray to Jesus for forgiveness so that he will wake up from the sleep of death to eternal life.

Also, he left a house and asked that it be donated to an animal shelter, "because animals are ignored and need much more protection and care than human beings, who are able to communicate and work for survival."
