My Basement Flooded

Post by Para »

Last week my basement flooded. I have hundreds of games and dozens of systems but luckily the water didn't get anywhere near my games, systems, controllers, etc.

I was pretty happy and considered myself lucky that none of my games got destroyed, but I later found out that I lost dozens and dozens of old gaming magazines.

I had several Nintendo Power subscriptions while I was growing up, and dozens of other various magazines, (EGM, GamePro, Codebooks, etc). At first I didn't really care because they were just in storage and I kind of forgot about them over the years, but now it kind of bothers me a little bit. I am not sure if they have any real value (I didn't have the first issues of Nintendo Power or anything) but it still kind of sucks that cherished magazines from my childhood, full of some of the greatest games of all time are now ruined and thrown in the trash.

Not really sure what the whole point of this post is but I thought I would share this experience with you guys for the hell of it. I'm still not sure what to think about this situation because it definitely could of been worse, and I also kind of forgot about the magazines until it was too late, but still it is bothering me. I really would of liked to go through them again at some point in the near future and losing something sentimental and nostalgic (and possibly valuable?) is never a good thing.

A shame, sorry about losing your magazines. At least some can be googled and rediscovered, some PDFs online somewhere.

My game room resides in my basement as well. I'd shit myself if my basement got flooded and my stuff got ruined. I'd say you made out pretty well with none of your consoles or games getting harmed.

I had a similar experience a few years ago (a good chunk of my games, and a few other things, were stolen in the process of moving, because of a flooded basement actually), so I feel your pain. At least you didn't lose lose anything more...

I don't know if this is any consolation or not, but I would be MORE than willing to deal with a bunch of lost magazines rather than the actual systems. I was kinda braced for a far worse loss when I read this story, so I'm relieved for your sake the systems came out OK. I hope you're able to clean up the damage to your actual house without too much headache. :(

If you have household personal property insurance you might want to turn in an insurance claim if there was other things of enough value that would put you over your deductible. I work in claims and have seen gaming stuff replaced by our company before.

My DS was on the floor when my house's basement flooded a couple years ago. Wouldn't stay on for more than a couple seconds. Put it in a Tupperware full of rice for a week and it worked like new!

Sadly, I don't think you can do that with magazines. :S

How did sitting in a container of rice fix it?

Rice absorbs moisture really well.
