Final Fantasy Adventure: Square's Lost Gem on GB & History

Post by BlockMan »

Hey guys! My name's Blockman. Just registered today. How ya doin'?

To help break the ice, let's talk about one of my favorite games for one of my favorite handhelds: Final Fantasy Adventure. (Plus, the original Mana game don't cha know.) Not a lot of gamers do mention the classics on the Gameboy despite the overwhelming sales numbers it had cause they're really missing out on a gold mine here and Final Fantasy Adventure is sittin' pretty on top. It took a me a full 3 months to make, so I hope you enjoy it. Without ado, let's get started! :D

Final Fantasy Adventure Review Part 1
Final Fantasy Adventure Review Part 2

BTW, Classics Unleashed is the name of my show. I review forgotten and overlooked great games, in case you're wondering. Also, I have a facebook page too. Here's one for me: Jack Blockman (Facebook Link)

And one for the show: Classics Unleashed (Facebook Link).

Comments and feedback appreciated. Enjoy!

(Final Fantasy Adventure is the property of Square Enix.)

There is some definite quality in your approach: It's obvious you've put some effort into your sound quality and video editing. Definitely heads and shoulders above the usual Youtube effort.

Your pacing kinda turns me off, however. There is this thing you do when you bring up a point about a game and then re-iterate that point in a hyperbolic manner 3 or 4 times. That's a good approach but when you do it more than once in a single video it can drag the energy of the video down and make the viewer wonder when you're going to get to the point.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I was thinking of a way to word that, and you summed it up nicely. I actually turned off part one about 1/2 way in because I couldn't take it anymore. It was like a valley girl? Turning every sentence into a question?

Definitely work on your pacing, and tone down the need to keep slamming the same point home five times in a row.

Great frigging game though.

I'll be honest, I just don't watch game reviews. Ever. I don't think I've ever seen one. I just prefer reading reviews. Just me. But as stated... I agree that the game is amazing.

I appreciate the GB version as it's the earliest GB title I can think of with a battery, and that music was just excellent, but I have to spin this 180 degrees and say I much prefer the GBA remake to the original. While not quite as good as the GBA remake of Metroid in Zero Mission, I through Sword of Mana was a worthy update for the classic FF Adventure game. Plus it let me play as a girl, who I named Fiona.

Don't ask me why, but I always thought the name was appropriate for the game.

I've tried figuring out the first GB cart with battery, and this was my guess as well.

But as far as Sword Of Mana goes, agree to disagree. I found the sprites in the remake far less endearing.

...I don't know. It just felt right to me the first time. ALSO I found all the cut-scenes really tiresome in the remake. I just wanted to y'know... play the game.

Gotta agree I love the look of the original, haven't played either versions though so that's all I can say. I probably just love the look since it's typical Links Awakening / Pokemon-ish graphics, hehe awesome.

That said I agree with some of the comments so far about your video. Great idea's and editing, although you talking needs to slow down or something. The enthusiasm is there, but yeah it just came off as kind of awkward with how fast you were saying a lot of stuff. Other than that, not bad. The clips of this game definitely make me want to play it, especially since I'm a huge fan of the Mana games and this is where it started!

Sword of Mana is an odd duck. It's Final Fantasy Adventure with ideas from all of the key Seiken Densetsu entries cobbled onto it with varying degrees of success.

-Multiple characters + the Ring System of Secret of Mana
-Character Classes from Seiken Densestu 3
-The artwork + item creation system from Legend of Mana

I LIKE Sword of Mana a lot but I tend to look at it as a stand alone game from Final Fantasy Adventure since so little of Final Fantasy Adventure really comes out in Sword of Mana. A few plot elements, characters, and musical scores make the jump but that was about it.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
