What's the best portable Genesis?
Now that there are several portable Genesis units on the market (including the Nomad, of course), has anyone played a good variety of them enough to recommend one over another? Is there one that has a good mix of screen/button layout/game compatibility? Or am I still better off emulating my carts on a PSP?

Dave, I still love my nomad but it is a battery destroyer and very bulky. I really liked the Genmobile, but I sold it to Token because the screen was not big enough for me. I would suggest that because the price is reasonable and it seemed to play every game I tried just fine. Also the AV out was fun.dsheinem wrote:Now that there are several portable Genesis units on the market (including the Nomad, of course), has anyone played a good variety of them enough to recommend one over another? probably the best one next to the Nomad is the GenMobile, however it still has it flaws. so i say just stick to the Nomad or the emulation on the PSP.

Re: What's the best portable Genesis?
I know that I use my nomad to play RPG's mostly and the two new clones don't play a couple games PS4 and Bloodlines are ones I know for sure.
The downfall of the nomad, I use real good rechargeable batteries and get 6 hours or so of life out of them, is the blurry or ghosting of the image on fast moving games.
So if you plan on playing shumps or action games try one of the newer ones, if RPG's are for you get the original hardware.
Or you can do the screen and battery mod on the Nomad to make it superior to all three.

The Genmobile left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm never venturing from the PSP.

There is one you guys haven't mentioned. The Gopher. It's not perfect, but it's better than the Gen Mobile..or Retro Gen..whichever one takes the cartridges. Just better overall compatibility, though it still is far from perfect. Basically it's a very slim Genesis clone that takes an SD card. It's about $40. The sound emulation is quite honestly..crap, and it does not save games. So you'd have to stick to the games that don't require saves.
If you want the perfect portable Genesis experience, go with whats already been suggested. Stay with the PSP. However, I did see a guy on YouTube who modifies Nomads by changing the screen and somehow got the battery life to be MUCH better. I'll edit this post and see if I can find it.
EDIT: This guy.

Get a Nomad and use good rechargeable batteries (I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries and they last long and charge quick).
I have the screen modded with a new LCD and it's amazing - also saves on the battery life.

I presume the desktop version uses the same hardware? (At $20), those things looked so appealing too.)

Oh -- that sounds awesome -- any guides out there on how to put one of these together?BEERS AND VIDEOS wrote:Get a Nomad and use good rechargeable batteries (I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries and they last long and charge quick).
