There's a very simple reason why debating what is and what isn't art is completely useless:
"Art" has as much meaning as "biweekly".
That's it. It doesn't mean anything. It's purely a matter of politics and the shallow respect you get by attaching the name "art" to something you did.
I can't help but think that using the term "art" and trying to show that something is and isn't "art" has become the goal, like when people try to label something as "sexist" or "racist" instead of explaining why it's bad. The term is the easy way out.
Thoughts?

Re: The problem with "art"
I think the word art has become a very context sensitive sort of thing. I mean you can call any kind of entertainment art. However, when you call something "artsy", you are implying it has a unique, unconventional and possibly even unorthodox quality to its presentation
And of course you can call anything you are skilled or talented at your "art". Fixing cars can be your "art". Hence martial arts for people who fight.
I think ultimately art is expression, but it has indeed become a very vague sort of word. It meaning changes based on how you are using it....and perhaps how others interpret it

I disagree with the term not meaning anything, I do agree with the pretentiousness attached to it.

I always thought that when people say: "This isn't art!" They really mean: "I don't like this.".

All you need to create art is hot chicks, weapons, and something big or flashy with a motor. If you want to get really artsy, throw in some skulls and..... BAM! Art.

It's not quite the same, though it's related. For example, I wouldn't say that Final Fight is art, but I love Final Fight.

Re: The problem with "art"
I think when people say "art" they usually mean "effective art," which I take to more or less be something which is intentionally crafted to orient the mind towards spiritual, philosophical, or "higher-emotional" (beyond surprise, annoyance, and other minor "twitching" reactions) cognition via a means which is to some extent beyond common modes of communication (note: mode, not medium. The difference between talking to your mother about moth balls and reciting a Shakespearean sonnet; the difference between a prosaic documentary and a dramatic film). However a work of art -- or a "creation" as I often call art which is not meant to be effective -- can be wonderful even if it isn't effective art, as we all know.
