Not only is this a great marketing move, it's also the utmost exemplification of utter fanboyism. Last year, Sega ran a competition to promote Yakuza 3, which promised as reward a US$ 9,000 worth of a full-back tattoo, replicating that of Kazuma Kiryu's dragon ink.
Today, Sega's finally announced who the lucky competition winner was. His name is Fari Salievski, a 46-year-old martial arts instructor and MMA trainer from Liverpool NSW.
Doing the amazing artwork is artist Josh Roelink of Sydney's Tatudharma Studios. In case you were wondering why it took Sega this long to announce the winner, it's because getting the tattoo done took an approximate six months to complete. Fari had to sit through the pain for some four hours every three weeks. As you can see, though, it was all very much worth it.
The announcement of the Yakuza 3 competition winner comes in good time too, as Yakuza 4 is set to come out later this week. You can get it exclusively on the PlayStation 3 when it hits March 24th.

I love this series, and Kiryu's tattoo is as awesome as it gets, but I think it's pretty ridiculous to get that kind of ink done because you like a video game. I dunno.

Video game or no, it's an awesome freaking tattoo. Granted, I'm not into inking myself, but if I were, the fact that it's from a video game would not sway my decision in anyway. Hell, it could be from an Uwe Boll movie and I'd still rock that shit.

Also agree with you, it is an awesome tat. Better than this dude who got a big MK dragon on his back.

Topic title is incorrect. Sega was the one who paid for the tattoo.
I think all tattoos are stupid, but if this guy likes Ryuu ga Gotoku that much, then good for him. The tattoo artist certainly did a great job on it.

Wonder what would happen if he did take his shirt off in Japan...

He would probably get laughed at. I don't think anyone would be mistaking a white dude with a giant video game tattoo as a yakuza.
Actual yakuza usually tattoo their entire bodies anyhow. The characters only getting back pieces in the game is just a stylistic choice.
