I don't tend to beat the games I own. Of the 450+ games I own I've only beat about 50. I think I just tend to play for a bit, but then as soon as I buy a new game I forget about the game I was playing before and don't get back to it for a long while. The games I tend to beat are the ones that I just can't put down. I have beaten most Mario and Zelda games, Castlevania SOTN, both Mass Effects, both Uncharted, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia games, etc. There is some magic formula with some games that trigger just the right cord with me that keep me interested all the way through.
So I've decided to make an effort to go back and beat more of the games in my library. Especially the really good games I own that I really don't know why I never made an effort to complete (I'm almost done with MegaMan X right now, it's easier than I remember it as a kid).
What about you guys? Do you finish most of your games, or just play until something else comes along? Have you beat more than a third of the games in your collection? More than half?

Re: Finishing games
I have that habit and have been doing my best to break myself of it.
So far the things that have helped me the most have been a gaming tracker like backloggery.com and on this website, participating in the 'Games Beaten 2011' thread. Watching my list of beaten games grow has kept me on track to try and finish most of my backlog by years end.
Of course, I also avoid buying games I know I won't finish. RPG's, for instance. I avoid them like the plague because they just linger on my shelf, mocking me for not having the attention span / free time I did as a kid.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: Finishing games
I have a notepad on my desk. It has a list of games I am currently playing, my general rule is 3 games at a time (Usually different consoles and different genres) and until I cross it off, I dont go onto another.
However over the summer (Winter in the States) I picked up so many new games I now have 9 games on the piece of paper. Despite all my recent pickups I wont be starting anything new until I at least get it down to 5, though I really cant wait to have it back to 3....I blame FFXIII.....Waste of time.

Re: Finishing games
Glad I'm not alone. I too avoid most RPGs, unless I know I'm going to love it (Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is going to destroy all of my free time...). Yeah, that backloggery site looks cool. I wanted to join but registration is "temporarily closed." I'm using Collectorz.com to track my completion right now, but the UI really isn't that great for that kind of tracking. I think I will start posting progress in the 'Games Beaten 2011' thread though.

Re: Finishing games
I'm with emwearz, I only play a couple of games at a time until I beat them, otherwise they get lost in the shuffle. Right now I am playing Red Dead Redemption for my main console game, Heavy Rain with the wife, and Jeanne d'Arc on my PSP. I'm also with you in that when Skyrim comes out, bye-bye free time.

Re: Finishing games
Anyone have any good tips on how to clear up a backlog with limited free time?
Re: Finishing games
Watch the ending on YouTube and say you beat it.

Re: Finishing games
Hehe, I've been thinking of doing that for Brutal Legend.
That final boss battle is retarded, I refuse to try beating it.

Re: Finishing games
I really enjoyed the ending to that game, so I thoroughly suggest that you try to beat it. I also loved the cutscene where *character's name has escaped my memory* throws herself into the lake to the soundtrack of Mr. Crowleykelsoanim wrote:Hehe, I've been thinking of doing that for Brutal Legend. That final boss battle is retarded, I refuse to try beating it.
