Do You Collect Gaming Collectibles (not games/consoles)?

Post by BurningDoom »

Do you collect more than just consoles, accessories, and games when it comes to classic gaming? What do you collect? Magazines? Strategy Guides? Posters? Action Figures? Cartoons? Lunch Boxes?

I collect classic gaming posters and magazines. I have a decent amount of old Nintendo Power magazines from the NES & SNES days as well as a bunch from the Gamecube era. Also a few other random gaming magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly, Tips & Tricks, and Official Playstation Magazine among others. I also have a long run of the current running Game Informer, but it only stretches back to the beginning of the last-gen (PS2, XBox, Gamecube, GBA). I'd LOVE to get my hands on the first few issues of Nintendo Power, and I'd LOVE to get my hands on Sega Vision and Official Sega Dreamcast Magazines.

I also have quite a few gaming posters around my house including Super Mario Bros. 1, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mega Man X, Metroid: Prime, Super Mario Galaxy, Time Crisis, Sega Master System, WCW Thunder, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Halo, and others. They're mixed in with a ton of Marvel & DC Comics posters and metal band posters.

And finally have a small collection of gaming books. I have an awesome, huge, informative, fully-color book called "High Score! The Illustrated History of Electronic Games"

I also have this really cool book that is a great reference for collectors. The "2007 Video Game Price Guide". Obviously the prices in the price guide aren't gonna be accurate, but it's the most complete, printed in book form list of retro games you will find:

I also have a bunch of different code books for different eras. I have one for the PSX/Saturn/N64/GBC/Dreamcast era. I have one for N64/Dreamcast/PS2/XBox/Gamecube/GBA era. I have one for PS2/XBox/Gamecube/GBA. And I have one for PS2/PS3/Wii/XBox 360/DS/PSP era. Go any further back and I have to track down individual magazine issues or books that are only on an individual console. I will eventually get them, I just haven't got to them yet.

I have some action figures. Five are from FFVII, but four of them are the Advent Children designs. An old girlfriend actually gave me all but one of them. I also have an Alex Mercer from Prototype figure that I picked up on clearance for $1.50 because I needed quick change for a twenty. Then I have a Halo Mongoose RC car that someone gave me as a birthday gift and a large RE5 water bottle. Oh, and a bigass Tonberry in raincoat from FFX my sister gave me and a squirtle I won in a crane game. And any posters that come tucked away with games I buy. So I have a bunch of stuff but don't really collect for it.

Posters, mostly of Mega Man and Metroid. My favorites are the Nintendo Power posters of 4 of my favorite games of all time: Secret of Mana, Super Metroid and Mega Man X / X2 in custom frames.

I got some VERY odd looks at the frame store when I laid out the cash to have these bad boys done up.

EDIT:

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I have some game art I'm hoping to have framed someday, but this thought has gone through my mind a number of times :)

It is VERY expensive but I think it is worth it. The difference between having a cheap piece of magazine paper thumbtacked to your wall and having that same poster professionally mounted and framed is like night and day.

It goes from being something adolescent and sloppy to looking like a serious take on your hobby.

I have the odd bits and pieces dotted around. I have a complete set of Mario beany babies. A few of those MGS figurines. Some random Club Nintendo stuff (from the NES era, like metal mario/zelda pins and post cards) and a fuck ton of gaming mags from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s.

Currently keeping me company:

I wouldn't say that I collect video game memorabilia but when I do come across something and a yard sale or thrift store, I'll usually buy it.

My personal favorite is the Street Fighter II board game.
